Dawson Lions Club
Dawson Lions Club met at noon Aug. 26 and heard Darwin Myers of Texas Department of Transportation. On Sept. 23, the speaker was Butch Warren, county commissioner of Navarro County Precinct 3. The Lions are very interested in the upkeep of the roads, bridges, and all state and county projects.
The Dawson Lions also enjoy their good fellowship at meetings which are held at the fellowship hall of First United Methodist Church in Dawson. They welcome visitors. Lion Lena Mae Carver provides the beautiful music for meetings.
Recently a 50-year member Lion Norman Summers was awarded a trophy for his years of service. Summers leads the club in the pledge to the flag of the United States and the singing of “God Bless America” at each meeting. He has held many offices over the years and is a leader on the board for the club.
The speaker for the Oct. 28 meeting is Vicki Matthews, Dawson Elementary principal.
Members of the Dawson Lions were present at the homecoming game when Dawson Bulldogs won against Frost.
Dawson Garden Club
At the Oct. 6 meeting, Dawson Garden Club embarked on one of the club’s project sites on the corner of Tiger Tote in Dawson. A master gardener and native plant authority, Andrea Tomerlin provided the informative program by demonstrating the proper method of preparing the flower bed and planting native plants while incorporating organic compounds.
During the business meeting held at Tiger Tote, thanks to the manager, Tomerlin continued to offer suggestions concerning the cultivation of native plants. She distributed literature on plants which attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
After this meeting, the members present, guest Rosemary Fagan, and Tomerlin were treated to lunch by Tom Johnson, owner of Tiger Tote.
After lunch, Tomerlin, sister of club member Sara Moses, went with club members to the city park where she assisted in planting native plants there. The club was also advised about beautifying the cement bases of the old railroad depot.
The 11 a.m. Nov. 10 meeting will honor veterans from the community at Dawson’s First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
Present at the October meeting were Carolyn Goode, Doris Meredith, Syble Garrison, Melva Turner, Rosemary Fagan, Sue Comer, Paula Sears, Ruby Faucett, Sara Moses, Andrea Tomerlin, Deborah Sawyer, and Lena Mae Carver.
Woman’s Club House Association
Leslie Bruce, talented musician, will entertain Kinsloe House members and guests at the Nov. 4 program luncheon. A graduate of Christ for the Nation Bible Institute of Dallas, Bruce leads the worship service at Frost United Methodist Church. She has shared her talent in such places as nursing homes, area churches, and the women’s prison in Gatesville. Many people have enjoyed her performances at Corsicana Opry. For this week’s performance, she will do traditional as well as Christian songs, some of which she has composed. Her beautiful voice will inspire everyone as she plays her guitar and sings.
The telephone committee, chaired by Cecelia Alexander, will host this program. Members of the committee are Marianne Anderson, Corrine Lee, Joanne Murphey, Jera O’Neal, Beth Roberts, Margie Talkington, and Christine Williams.

Ellis-Navarro Chapter 1191, NARFE
Ellis-Navarro Chapter 1191, National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, met at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 13 at Ryan’s Steakhouse in Waxahachie within 22 members and three guests attending.
The meeting was called to order by president Moses Miller with the invocation by Bob Cornell and pledge to flag. The guest speaker Teresa Otts, government account representative for Blue Cross/Blue Shield, was introduced by Ralph Nelson of Waxahachie. Otts has been with Blue Cross/Blue Shield for 18 years. She gave an update on all the benefit changes for year 2010 and reminded all that open season is Nov. 9 through Dec. 14. A question and answer session followed her presentation.
After the program, a business session was conducted which included officer and committee reports. An audit committee was appointed by president Moses Miller to audit the financial records for year 2009.
The next NARFE Chapter 1191 meeting will be 11:30 a.m. Nov. 10 at Sirloin Stockade in Corsicana. All active and retired federal employees, spouses and guests are invited to attend. Thomas Meredith Chapter
Thomas Meredith Chapter, Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, will attend the Kinsloe musical program Nov. 4. Chapter members may call (254) 578-1656 by Oct. 30 for their reservations.
Navarro County Board ACS
Navarro County Board of American Cancer Society met at noon Oct. 20 at First United Methodist Church in Corsicana. The board is a voluntary-based group dedicated to eliminating cancer and bringing more awareness of the ACS services available in Navarro County. At the Oct. 20 meeting, the board was honored to have Dr. Bob Kingman, general surgeon, speak to the ACS board on the advances currently being made in the treatment and surgery of breast cancer. The ACS board finalized the details of the wine and cheese fund-raising event being held Oct. 22 and began planning another great Relay for Life fund-raising event scheduled in 2010.
Navarro County ACS board welcomes you to join this worthy endeavor. Its mission is to bring more awareness to Navarro County and the ACS services available to patients and their families who are fighting cancer. Commissioners to meet Tuesday
