Downtown merchants look to revive association
Twenty local merchants and city officials met Tuesday at Two Doors Down Coffee Shop to discuss reforming a downtown association in Corsicana.
A previous downtown association is still incorporated as a non-profit, and the new group could take over that old name and bank account, explained Malinda Veldman, the Main Street director.
“I really miss having a downtown association to get consensus,” Veldman told the merchants.
“I think we need it,” said Danny Hudson, owner of Corsicana Auto Parts.
One recommendation, by Phyllis Pallanich of the Copy Shop, was to host a downtown after-hours open house, to allow visitors downtown to shop late. The target date for that is Dec. 4, the same night that the Palace is hosting two Christmas concerts, and the Warehouse is hosting its own show.
“That would be a good time to do an open house, but we need to get the word out and get more people involved,” said Todd Jones, owner of Two Doors Down.
Before then, however, the fledgling group wants to canvass interested businesses, both those physically located downtown and those in other parts of the city, with a questionnaire.
Another meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Nov. 23 at Two Doors Down.
Helping to boost interest in downtown could be the start of the Winter Farmer-Rancher Market, which will take place each Saturday through Dec. 12 from 8 am. to noon on Main Street, said Jackie King, who’s organizing the new farmers market.
In addition to coordinating sales, open houses and cooperation, a new downtown association could also help leverage power with the city, and coordinate advertising efforts, the merchants said.
Corsicana merchants have anything any shopper would want, it’s just a matter of getting people into the stores to discover what’s available, Pallanich said.
