H.E.B. crew answers call

There is a phrase that every partner working at H.E.B. in Corsicana knows — “Texas Friendly.”

What that phrase means is every partner’s help is needed.

That is exactly how the Corsicana store’s partners responded to United Way of Navarro County this year, participating with the store in making a record-high donation pledge of $28,132 to the local United Way 2010 fund drive.

H.E.B. has a long standing corporate philosophy of giving back to the communities it serves, dating to its beginnings in 1905. H.E.B.’s founder, Florence Butt, regularly took food to the less fortunate citizens of Kerrville, the site of the first H.E.B. Store. H.E.B. still gives back at least 5 percent of its pre-tax earnings each year to the communities where it does business across the state of Texas and Mexico.

United Way giving for H.E.B. is a little bit different. This is one of the only times during the year where H.E.B. asks its partners to give back along with the company. This is entirely voluntary on their behalf, although H.E.B. does offer some incentives for giving at different levels. Thanks to the support and contributions of its partners, Corsicana’s H.E.B. set a new record in giving for the coming year at $28,132. This is a pledge of more than $200 per partner and more than $4 per week out of each partner’s paycheck for the coming year. This was pledged in its entirety by the partners at the Corsicana store.

Throughout the Central Texas Region, of which Corsicana is a part of, H.E.B. partners contributed nearly $1.3 million to the United Way.

“It amazes me that in these economically challenging times how our partners find a way to step up in such a big way and give a portion of their earnings to others less fortunate than them,” says Jeff Thomas, Central Texas Region vice president.

Every H.E.B. has at least one United Way Coordinator. Many stores have more. This year’s coordinators for the Corsicana store were Mike Fletcher, Joe Kruse and Carolyn Jones. Fletcher and two store managers from the Waco-Temple Area, Eric Tovar and Kristy Goldenberg, were the Central Texas North Region Coordinators for the region’s 21 stores and the Waco Region office and truck terminal.

“It is inspiring and heart lifting to see so many companies recognizing the elevated needs of our citizens and, thus, working so diligently to meet and exceed their respective campaign goals this year,” said Ellen Block, executive director of United Way of Navarro County. “I find it especially touching that the employees of a local grocery chain united together to contribute such an incredible amount.

“Year after year, the employees of H.E.B. have continually been strong advocates for United Way of Navarro County and for 2010 they have truly excelled,” said Block.
