Salvation Army seeks holiday help

By Janet Jacobs

Daily Sun

The seasonal red buckets that collect change for the Salvation Army are emptier this year, another victim of the economy. It will hurt Christmas for some of the region’s neediest families, said Jackie Williams, a social worker with the Navarro County Salvation Army.

“Things are really slow,” she said. “Our kettles are not where they usually are at this time of year.”

Another indicator for the Army are the angels left on local Christmas trees. The Salvation Army has more than 600 local kids signed up to receive gifts through the Angel Trees. Plenty of those children haven’t been picked up yet, Williams said.

“We still have people coming into sign up, but we had to have a cut-off date,” she said. If enough children are “adopted” from the trees, then some late-comers can be added.

The Salvation Army is doing some things differently this year. Foster care kids and CPS kids aren’t included in the Angel Trees this year, since CPS is doing its own gift collection and distribution this year. The Food Pantry of Navarro County is providing all the food this year, although families can make a request through the Salvation Army for one of the dinners.

Another difference is a partnership with JC Penney, which has an Angel Tree button on the company’s Web site. People can go there, pick out a Navarro County child, find a gift on-line and never have to set foot in a store.

“You can do it all from your computer,” Williams said. “You can get on JCPenney.com, and the stuff comes right here.”

What gifts and food are received will be distributed on Dec. 17 at the Fannie Mae Vernon room at the Youth Expo. People who have signed up will be given a time slot, with times starting at 9 a.m., and they will be able to pick up their gifts and food that same day.

Volunteers are also being sought to ring the bells and man the kettles around town, Williams said.

“The ones we have this year are really in need,” Williams said. “We’re going to do our best to make Christmas for everybody.”
