Fire protection gets a boost
Kerens Emergency Services District purchases new tanker truck
From Staff Reports
Fire protection for Navarro County got a big boost Monday with the arrival of a 2,000 gallon tanker truck, a purchase made by the Kerens Emergency Services District No. 1.
The tanker is the first major expenditure of the taxing entity, formed in 2007 to enhance fire protection in its service district that encompasses roughly the area of the Kerens Independent School District. Through mutual aid agreements, however, the new truck will also be available to respond throughout Navarro County when needed.
The truck’s water capacity — 2,000 gallons — will be especially helpful for assisting other departments, said David Foreman, vice president of the ESD.
“There is definitely a need for water in the rural areas,” Foreman said.
Foreman said the 2009 model tanker truck was purchased for $206,000. The district hopes to be able to purchase another truck soon.
The new unit will be housed at the Kerens Volunteer Fire Department.
