Navarro Regional Senior Circle

Pictured in front of the Showboat Branson Belle, the Navarro Regional Hospital Senior Circle group traveled to Branson in November. The group enjoyed the shows of The Baldknobbers; Tony Orlando and the Lennon Sisters; The 12 Irish Tenors; The Red, Hot and Blue; The Brett Family and The Hughes Brothers, as well as many sites, shopping and lots of eating. On the way home the group visited the Bill Clinton Library. The next trip will be June 2010 to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Corsicana Rotary Club

The Wednesday Rotary Club hosted a table during the downtown Halloween Trick or Treat festivities selling bottled drinks as a fundraiser for Polio Plus which is a worldwide effort to eradicate polio. In observance of Jonas Salk’s birthday which was on October 24, and who created the first vaccine for the disease in 1952, Rotary clubs around the world were asked to participate in a fund raising effort to make the public aware of the Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio worldwide. There are only four remaining countries, India, Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan with outbreaks of this disease. Dawson Lions Club

Dawson Lions Club met Nov. 18 at fellowship hall of First United Methodist Church in Dawson. The Lions made plans for the Christmas party to be held at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 19 at the above location. Lions should bring a $5 generic gift in gift wrap. If planning to attend, Lions should RSVP to Bill Ryan at (254) 578-1839 by Dec. 12

Dawson Lions are pleased to welcome to membership Robbye Nesmith, sponsored by Lion Paula Sears. Nesmith was inducted by Lion president Jo Maxwell.



Dawson Garden Club

Dawson Garden Club has participated in several important events during the fall. The first one was a celebration of the large commemorative marker naming those who made donations of various kinds to the erecting of the pavilion and the placement of tables and benches at the Dawson City Park. This was a labor of love by the garden club. The meeting at the fellowship hall of First United Methodist Church in Dawson was the opportunity for the club to present awards to the men and women who had made the park initiative possible.

Mistress of ceremonies at the meeting was Melva Turner who presented the awards after the meeting was called to order by Dawson Garden Club president Deborah Sawyer. The special guest was Sara McReynolds, who came to Dawson in 2004 and gave a report to the club about a possible landscape plan for making the park area more appealing and useful for the residents of Dawson. At the time McReynolds was the recording secretary for Texas Garden Clubs and curator at Old Fort Parker in Mexia.

Melva Turner was the treasurer of the garden club. She kept a careful record of the donations and all who participated in the work that was done in the project. The club president at the time was Ruby Faucett.

The club gave numerous garage sales to add to the donations given by the club members and other interested people. The project lasted from 2005 to 2009 and actually continues to the present because repairs have to made when people misuse the park furnishings and when the lawn needs to be moved and new plants planted.



Alpha Rho Chapter

Alpha Rho Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, has had some very interesting speakers for meetings in October and November. In October, Tabitha Triplett provided some intriguing ideas for scrapbooking which gave chapter members specific tips on ways to engage family members in keeping a pictorial record. The rosebud for October was Cinda Melton.

The November meeting emphasized the importance of the Navarro Council of the Arts in the lives of the schoolchildren of the county. Leah Dill Blackard gave an encouraging description of the programs provided by the council and gave the chapter a great deal of pride in what is offered to educate children in arts in the area. November rosebud was Patty Knauth for her love and dedication to the chapter.

The activity set for the 5:30 p.m. Dec. 10 meeting at Kinsloe House will be a dinner and Christmas silent auction. The auction will benefit the Julia Stewart Memorial Scholarship. Members are encouraged to bring an item for the benefit and be prepared to buy something. In the past some of the most desirable items have been homemade candies and baked goods as well as holiday crafts.

The members are reminded that the chapter has an ongoing project to provide items for the “Any Soldier Project.” Alpha Rho Chapter has selected a female soldier and items like hand sanitzer, lotion, soap, and baby wipes would be appreciated.

The importance of the bell in the tradition of schools is being emphasized by Alpha Rho Chapter. The society has chosen the theme of “Advance the Society: Believe, Engage, Learn, Lead.” The last four words spell “BELL.”

The chapter is very proud of president Hendrik for being the grand prize winner of the Daily Sun recipe contest. Her recipe for fried okra salad was the hit of the season.



Woman’s Club House Association

Paul Hooper, executive director of the Corsicana/Navarro County Chamber of Commerce, will be the guest speaker for the Kinsloe House program luncheon at noon Dec. 16. Hooper will tell about the Chamber and its role in the community and share news about coming events and new businesses that might be considering locating in Navarro County. Born and reared in Charlotte, N.C., Hooper came to Corsicana after spending four years in Arlington. He has been in his present position since 2006.

The building committee of Kinsloe House will host this event. Committee chairman Diane Cooley will be assisted by members Mellie Howard, Pat Howell, Jan Moore, Margaret Thomas and Beverly White. The deadline for members to make reservations for themselves and their guests for this event is noon Dec. 14 by calling (903) 874-5791. Cancellations are due by the same date.

Members of the Kinsloe board of directors are reminded of the monthly meeting following the program at 1:30 p.m.



Corsicana Newcomers Club

Corsicana Newcomers Club will meet Dec. 18 at Kinsloe House, 618 W. Third Ave. Social time will be at 11 a.m. with lunch served at 11:30 a.m. There will be a gift exchange so be sure to bring a wrapped gift between $15 and $20. Also, Helen Griffiths will play the piano and club members will sing Christmas carols.

The “Lunch Bunch” will go to La Pradera, 1401 W. Seventh Ave. at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 10. For reservations, call Alice Kautz at (903) 874-0844. The “Roadrunners” will go to Malakoff for shopping and lunch Dec. 17. Meet at the First Baptist Church parking lot, corner of 15th and Collin streets. Roadrunners will leave at 10 a.m. and return at 4 p.m.
