Jan. 2

American Legion Post 22, 632 N. Beaton St., will have meetings as scheduled. Executive committee will meet at 1 p.m., Legionnaires will meet at 1:30 p.m., Sons of the American Legion will meet at 3 p.m., and the Ladies Auxiliary will meet at 4 p.m. To attend the meetings, membership must be current. Jan. 4

A public meeting, sponsored by the PUSH committee will be held beginning at 5:45 p.m. in the Nancy Roberts Meeting Room of the Corsicana Public Library, 100 N. 12th St. This meeting will be open to the public and residents and business owners and managers throughout Navarro County are encouraged to attend. The purpose of the meeting is to dialogue and to develop a plan of action to have the community more “business friendly.” The goal is to retain current jobs and employers and recruit new jobs to the community and county. Corsicana Masonic Lodge will have a stated meeting at 7:30 p.m. The district deputy will be making a visit. Meal will be served at 6:30 p.m.



City of Blooming Grove will hold its monthly city council meeting at 6:30 p.m. at Blooming Grove City Hall, 200 S. Fordyce St.



Piecemakers’ Quilt Guild will have food and fellowship starting at 9:30 a.m. at Westhill Church of Christ. The business meeting will start at 10 a.m. PQG membership dues for 2010 will still be accepted. The program “How to put a sleeve on your quilt” will be given by Jan Libal. A block exchange project will also be discussed shortly after the business meeting. “Sit and sew” will follow the business and block exchange discussion times. Jan. 5

Corsicana Chapter No. 118, Order of Eastern Star, will hold a stated meeting at 7:30 p.m. at Corsicana Masonic Lodge. A potluck supper will be served at 6:30 p.m. All area OES members are invited. For more information, call Bonnie Mathison at (903) 874-0226.



The Blooming Grove Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. in Heritage Hall of the First Methodist Church in Blooming Grove. Jan. 6

Eureka Crime Watch will hold its regular monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. at the Eureka United Methodist Church. Special guest will be Capt. Elmer Tanner of the Navarro County Sheriff’s Department. The public is invited and refreshments will be served following the meeting.



Jan. 7

Blooming Grove Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. at the Blooming Grove Fire Station. The speaker will be Jeanette Wisdom, RN, BSN, senior nurse at UT Southwestern in Dallas. She will be speaking about her recent trip to Nigeria, sponsored by Africa Mission of Hope. Everyone is invited, and light refreshments will be served.



Corsicana community blood drive will be held from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Navarro Shriner’s Building, 323 N. Commerce St. Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and have a photo ID. For more information, call (800) 448-3543.



Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas will host a “Workforce Center Orientation” at 10 a.m. and a job search workshop on “Resume Preparation” at 10 a.m. at its office, 720 N. Beaton St. “WorkInTexas.com” training will be offered at 5:30 p.m. For more information, call (903) 874-8276.



American Red Cross will hold its Corsicana Community Blood Drive from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Navarro Shriner’s building. The process, from check-in to the post-donation visit to the canteen, is usually about an hour’s time. For appointment or information to donate call 1-800-Give-Life (448-3543). Potential donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good health the day they donate. There is no upper age limit on donating.



Jan. 9

Angels of Corsicana, a troop support group, will meet at 9 a.m. at 1020 N. Business 45. The group will be packing items to send to the troops. The group will be packing for 18 or more soldiers from Corsicana plus many more soldiers. One Dec. 7, the Angels mailed 20 boxes to the troops, which cost almost $700 in postage. Everyone’s help is needed. If you have items to donate, you can drop them off at the American Legion Post 22, 632 N. Beaton St., after 2 p.m. daily. Packing for troops in December was great with a lot of new people showing up to help. It was a great success. Jan. 11

Woodmen of the World Lodge 5 will have a meeting at 6 p.m. at Liberty Hall. All members, their families and guests are cordially invited.



The Republican Party of Navarro County will hold its executive committee meeting at 7 p.m. on the seventh floor of the Bank of America building located at 100 North Main Street. County chair Frank Steed will discuss the precinct chairs role in the upcoming grassroots precinct conventions for 2010. All registered voters are welcome to attend. Jan. 12

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at Sirloin Stockade, 2508 W. Seventh Ave., Corsicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28, 1961, and May 7, 1975, or in any duty location between Aug. 5, 1964, and May 7, 1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with application and dues. Members and guests are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting.



Corsicana Emergency Corps, 416 S. 12th St., will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Monthly meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month. For more information, call (903) 872-5072.

Eureka Masonic Lodge will be dark in order to join the Blooming Grove lodge for the district deputy’s visit.



Navarro County Branch of the NAACP will hold a general membership meeting at 7 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 1114 E. Sixth Ave. All members are asked to attend. Your particpation is critical to the success of the NAACP. All general membership meetings will be held on the second Tuesday of each month. You can contact the Navarro County NAACP by mail at P.O. Corsicana Lodge No. 63, I.O.O.F., 3330 W. Second Ave., will host a state-wide degree rally. Visiting members from various lodges as well as officers of the Grand Lodge I.O.O.F. of Texas will be present. Lodge will open at 8 a.m. for early arrivals. Lodge will open at 9 a.m. and the degree work will start at 10 a.m., followed by lunch at noon. Completion of the degree work will again start at 1 p.m. and should conclude by 3:30 p.m. The lodge has sponsored “Founders Day” rallies honoring Thomas Wildey, founder of the I.O.O.F. on the North American continent, for the eighth year. Jan. 18

Navarro County Branch NAACP will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with “A Day of Celebration” rally, march and oratory contest. The rally will be at 10 a.m. in Bunert Park, with Leon Tates as the speaker. The march will begin at Bunert Park, and end at the M.L.K. Center, where the oratory contest will begin at noon. The youth of Navarro County will recite Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and will also have exhibits. For more information, contact Elmeree Burrell at (903) 874-2821.

    Texas Slabs’ jerky has issued a voluntary recall notice, effective Friday, according to proprietor Scott McGinty.
    The company makes flavored beef jerky and is headquartered out of Mansfield. Some of the jerky was distributed in Corsicana in January.
