CORSICANA - Whenever Joanne Hudson arrives in a new town, she knows to go to the public library for free internet access. Hudson lives in an RV and she and her husband travel around the country, volunteering at state parks in exchange for free campsites. They arrived at Navarro Mills on Monday.
So a day after arriving in Navarro County, she was at the Corsicana Public Library checking her e-mail.
Free wireless Internet access jut became available at the Corsicana library last week. The Wi-Fi is available to the anyone who has a wireless-enabled laptop computer or device.
No password or library card are needed to access the service, said Chad Freeze, library director.
“If you need to charge your laptop, you’re going to have to sit in those few areas where you can charge, otherwise, anywhere in the building is fine,” Freeze explained. The signal can be received in the parking lot, but it fades a bit outside the building, he noted.
Having the service is just part of the digital age, Freeze said.
“This is something that has been a long time coming,” he said. “I think every public library ought to have Wi-Fi if they can afford it.”
Wi-Fi allows users to connect to the Internet at no cost to them with their own devices, giving them the freedom to be comfortable anywhere in the library while they read or perform research or other activities utilizing the World Wide Web. The library also offers some computer stations for people who don’t have a laptops or computers in their homes.
Stephen Farris, who runs an on-line news site, uses the Wi-Fi at the library to run his business. In the past, he used the free Wi-Fi available at the Two Doors Down Coffee shop, the Collin Street Bakery or fast-food restaurants, he said.
“It’s fast and reliable,” he said of the library’s Wi-Fi system.
