Jan. 12

Texas Workforce Commmission, 720 N. Beaton St., will hold a Job Search Workshop at 5:30 p.m. with focus on Basic PC Skills. For more information, call (903) 874-8276.



First United Methodist Church, 15th St. and Third Ave., will host “A Healthy You in 2012” at 6:30 p.m. Dr. David Lott, physical therapist, will be the speaker. Please join and start the new year right.



Jan. 14

Blood Drive for Sharon Barlow Nabors will be held by Carter Blood Care from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 122 W. Third Ave. All potential donors must be at least 17 years old or older to give. All donors at Carter BloodCare must bring a valid picture ID. Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds. Potential donors must be feeling well and healthy on the day of donating.



Corsicana Odd Fellow Lodge No. 63 will have a special date to honor Thomas Wildey, the Founder of Odd Fellowship on the North American Continent, by conducting the Lodge’s 12th annual “Degree Day” The Lodge opens at 8 a.m. for early arrivals, and begins at 9 a.m. All four degrees to be conferred. The Lodge is located at 3330 W. Second Ave., Corsicana. Visiting members welcomed.



Navarro Mills VFD will have a Chili Supper from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the fire station.



Angels of Corsicana Troop Support will have its monthly packing on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 9 a.m. at 1020 N. Bus. 45, the Angel Room. All ages are welcome to come pack. Needed are white tube socks. Jan. 15

Divorce Care  will begin a new class at First Baptist Church, 510 W. Collin, Corsicana on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012. The class meets from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Church Parlor for 13 weeks. Jan. 16

Navarro County Branch NAACP remembers Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with “A Day of Celebration” which will begin at 10 a.m. with a Rally in Bunert Park. The speaker will be Bennie Perry, assistant principal from Collins Middle School. Following the rally, there will be a march from Bunert Park to the MLK Center, where the Oratory Contest of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and program will begin at 12 Noon. Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance will present its Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday program at the Taylorosa Event Center on West Texas Hwy 22. "A Day On, Not A Day Off — The Dream Still Lives On" will begin at 7 p.m. Rev. Dairy G. Johnson, Sr. is the chairman of this event. Chairman Johnson is asking for 100 voices for the New Years mass choir ages young and old. Rehearsal dates are set for January 2 and 9, at the Bethlehem Baptist Church. Along with the mass choir for the evening a message will be given by Pastor Larry L. Polk, Sr. of the Second Mission Baptist Church.



Barry Crime Watch will resume meeting at the Barry Methodist Church at 7 p.m. The guest speakers will be the candidates  for Constable for Prec 4., Kenneth Kirkwood and Tommy Grant. Light refreshments will follow. Everyone is invited.



Jan. 17

Shakers and Scrapers Car Club will hold its monthly meeting at VG’s Event Pavilion (301 E 3rd Ave) at 6:30 p.m.  Shakers and Scrapers is a very diverse group of folks with a common interest of cars and a desire to help local charities and events.  We hold an annual car show during Derrick Days which helps to support a local charity.  If you are interested in seeing if we are a club that you might like to join, please come and attend our meeting.  For information call Dan at (903) 467-7170.



Derrick Days Festival Committee will have an organizational meeting at 12:15 p.m. in the Nancy Roberts Room of the Corsicana Public Library. All those wishing to be involved in the planning and operations of this year’s festival are encouraged to attend. Kinsloe House will host a presentation about CASA and Child Advocates that will feature Jenny Bratton, director of CASA, and Vicki Scoggins, program director. Navarro Regional Hospital’s Healthy Woman presents Pink Pumps and Pearls at 5 p.m. with a Women’s Expo (with shopping, massages, and information from some of the community’s leading businesses and organizations), and dinner and entertainment at 6:30 p.m. The fourth annual event will take place at The Cook Center on Navarro College Campus, and will feature comedian Karen Mills, of Chattanooga, Tenn. Navarro Regional Hospital Senior Circle will host the second in a three part series on Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s. The presentation will be 5 to 7 p.m. at the Navarro Regional Hospital Dining Room, with Kimberly Knight of the Greater Dallas Alzheimer’s Organization as the speaker. What are the differences between Alzheimer’s, other dementias and normal memory loss due to aging? This is a good overview for those who have concerns about memory loss or have had a diagnosis of dementia, as well as for those who want information about Alzheimer’s disease. Learn about the Alzheimer’s disease process, and the programs offered by the Greater Dallas Chapter for both the person with Alzheimer’s and the caregiver.

Navarro Regional Hospital Senior Circle will hold the last in a three part series about Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The program will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Navarro Regional Hospital Dining Room, and Kimberly Knight of the Greater Dallas Alzheimer’s Organization will be the speaker. Know the 10 signs:  Early Detection Matters, will be the topic of this program. Learn the warning signs that may be symptoms of Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia.  Understand the importance of visiting your doctor early to rule out treatable conditions that may be the cause of these symptoms.  Early diagnosis helps with planning, treatment, the opportunity to participate in clinical trials and access to support from the Alzheimer's Association.

    When the school bell rings today, it will signal for most the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation.
    But for Dana Griffin, it will mark the end of his 30-year career teaching ag science at Corsicana High School, the only job he’s had since graduating from college.
    Though he is excited about his new horizons, this day will most likely be bittersweet, as 30 years of animals, ag projects, and kids — it’s always been about the kids — draws to a close.

  • Schools ready for summer

    With a nearly balmy winter, local school districts faced the end of the year with so-called “snow days” still in their pockets. Corsicana schools will spend one of those bad weather days Monday, taking off Memorial Day.
    The other free day was spent on April 9, the Monday after Easter.
    “We called it Good Friday, Better Monday,” said Susan Johnson, spokeswoman for the district.

    Open Door Church of God in Christ at 1201 E. Eighth Ave. will host a service tonight at 7 p.m. Pastor James Jones and wife Theresa A. Jones will be speakers. Pastor Jones is currently serving as Chairman of Evangelism for the Greater Huntsville Interdenominational Ministerial Fellowship in Huntsville, Alabama. Theresa A. Jones serves as co-pastor of the Reunited Christian Fellowship Church in Huntsville, where they both reside.
