Corsicana —
County Judge H.M. Davenport Jr. ruled Tuesday to deny the issuance of a permit to sell beer and alcohol at the store located at 1921 North 45th Street near Corsicana High School.
Davenport issued his ruling following testimony from several community members and law enforcement officers objecting to the store’s application to sell beer and wine for off-premise consumption.
The judge said his decision was based on “the general welfare, health, peace, morals, safety and sense of decency of the people.”
Testimony in the case included various criminal charges against two employees of the store — Jaskaran Bajwa and Kejbir Sigh, both relatives of the owner of the convenience store, Jatinder Bajwa — and previous criminal investigations of the establishment.
Both Jaskaran Bajwa and Sigh remain on duty at the store, according to testimony heard Tuesday, and are currently serving probation on charges of possession of marijuana and the sale of the drug test kit containing “synthetic urine.”
Those testifying in opposition to the proposed permit include Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton, Det. Kenneth Dunnagan, CISD Superintendent Dr. Diane Frost, representatives of IMPACT Corsicana, Sheriff's Deputy Rickey Regan, and Navarro County Sheriff Elmer Tanner.
Additionally, the city’s health inspector has permanently pulled the food service license of the establishment, banning the sale of food prepared on-site.
Jatinder Bajwa said he feels he is the victim of discrimination, and plans to appeal Davenport’s decision.
“It’s not fair — we’re not that happy with it,” he said.
