Corsicana — Dawson Garden Club Yard of the Month for October



Dawson Garden Club has chosen for Yard of the Month for October the home of Larry and Jane Adams at 307 N. Main in Dawson. This home is always appealing, but it is especially appropriate with the yard and porch decoration for the season. Be sure to give it a good look as you drive by.



Col. Roger Q. Mills Chapter 2466, United Daughters of the Confederacy



Col. Roger Q. Mills Chapter 2466, UDC, met Sept. 24 at 2 p.m .in the Nancy Roberts Room at the Corsicana Public Library. President Dana Stubbs called the meeting to order. Chaplain Geneva Davis led the opening prayer. President Stubbs led the ritual and the Lord’s Prayer. Marlene Ivy led the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States Flag, the Pledge to the Texas Flag and the Salute to the Flag of the Confederacy.

Secretary-treasurer Nancy Weems read the minutes and treasurer’s report both of which were approved. Jan Reeder reported on the We-Can Project. Registrar Nancy Rula reported the number of chapter members and prospective members. Historian Barbara Shore will be sent the minutes to be put on the website.

Stubbs reported on the Morse Memorial marker. The amount needed by November is about $600.

Jan Reeder and Nancy Rula are the chapter’s delegates to the Convention. The chapter will reimburse Jan for prizes she will furnish at the convention.

Marlene  Ivy passed out an updated page for the yearbook and will update the membership list. As chair of the District VIII Scholarship, Ivy passed out guidelines so that the members could made recommendations for a recipient. The District VIII meeting will be March 23 in Longview.

Pres. Stubbs suggested the purchase of a Stainless Banner as a memorial to our deceased members. Nancy Rula made a motion, seconded by Nancy Weems, that Dana be reimbursed and that members research minutes to discover names to go on the banner. The motion carried.

Stubbs will send a newsletter including a dues reminder. She reminded the chapter that we need to help with the Jan. 6 Albert Miller Lea Memorial Service. The chapter has been invited to co-host with the Parsons Camp in remembering the Battle of Galveston.

Jan Reeder presented a program about Mary Boykin Chestnut, a writer who kept a diary during the War between the States.

The meeting was adjourned with the reading of a poem written by Dana’s mother, Alice Bell. It was titled “Ode to a Confederate Soldier.”

After the singing of “Dixie,” refreshments of punch and cookies were served by Dana Stubbs. Eight members were present.



Navarro County Retired Teachers to meet



The Navarro County Retired Teachers Association will meet at 9:45 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2012 at Northwest Apartments Community Center, 1360 Northwest Ave.

The program will be presented by Dr. Trena Weidmann, pharmacist. All former school employees are invited to attend.

Navarro County Retired Teachers Association met on May 11 at Northwest Apartments meeting room. Acting President Warner Redus chaired the meeting. Genetha Thomas reported on the purchase of 113 books for five kindergarten classes at Bowie Elementary School. Marcia Lou Braly and other members of the Book Project Committee purchased books at a discount.

Minutes were read and approved. Treasurer’s report was given by  Theresa Shugart.

The speaker of the day was Dr. Diane Frost, Superintendent of CISD. She gave an update on the school district. The dual language program has good involvement. Sports programs are successful. Band programs are growing and becoming more successful as are UIL programs. There is a new preparation class for SAT. French has been added to the courses offered. A new program has been added to the eighth grade. This program will issue to each student a school-leased iPad, allowing students to use video lessons, textbooks, and resources for research. This grant will follow these students throughout their first year in college and includes funding for a counselor who focuses exclusively on the success of this class.

After the catered lunch, Don Vardeman, District XII President, used a theme of keys to install new officers: President, Nancy McAnally; First Vice President, Sue Sliger; Second Vice President, Genetha Thomas; Secretary, Marianne Anderson; and Treasurer, Kathy Huffman.

Vardeman encouraged members to enroll newly retired teachers and to attend District XII meeting in Waco.



Kinsloe House to host interesting program



Kinsloe House will present a very interesting program on Oct. 17, 2012 given by Cindy Burch, owner of the Dove’s Nest Restaurant in Waxahachie. She will be talking about delicious recipes in her Dove’s Nest Cookbook. The attendees will be able to purchase her cookbook after the program.  She will give members some ideas for creating good meals for ourselves and our families. Ms. Burch writes a column for the Ellis Co. Living Magazine and travels extensively world-wide collecting recipes. The Volunteer Committee, headed by Beverly White, and including Cecelia Alexander, Sheren Haedge, Marsha Banks, Jan Moore, Barbara Jones, Barbara Watkins, and Margaret Thomas is in charge of the program.

Please call and make your reservations by noon on Oct. 15. Attendees will find that they can’t ever have too many recipes after her presentation.
