Corsicana council to consider insurance, fencing Tuesday

Corsicana — The Corsicana City Council is scheduled to meet in regular session at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, in the council chambers of the Corsicana Government Center.

The council will once again take up the issue of a screening fence around the American RV lot, 4345 Highway 31. The owner has asked to be excused from the city requirement, but the council has thus far refused to allow it.

In addition, the city will take up whether or not to provide health insurance benefits to elected officials. If the council votes to allow it, it could cost as much as $42,000 a year.

Also under consideration is allowing city retirees to tap into a Texas Municipal League insurance pool. That measure won’t cost the city anything but would allow people who are younger than 65 but already retired an opportunity to get reduced-cost health insurance benefits.

    Texas’ most recent unemployment figures, from April, had the state at 6.4 percent unemployed, this is compared with the national average of 7.6 percent. In addition, state sales tax receipts for May 2013 were nearly 8 percent higher than in May 2012. Sales tax collections have increased for 38 consecutive months, boosted by strong business spending in the oil/natural gas and manufacturing sectors, and to some extent, retail sales, according to the Texas Comptroller’s office.
