Corsicana —
In a united effort of all five churches in Blooming Grove, First Baptist Church of Blooming Grove will be the venue for “This is My Story, This is My Song,” a one-woman play written and performed by Dr. Shellie O’Neal.
Rev. Nancy Summers of Blooming Grove United Methodist Church witnessed the play twice in Corsicana, and knew she wanted her congregation to see it. Bro. Grady Cashion at First Baptist, Blooming Grove is her neighbor across the street, and both thought this to be the perfect opportunity to have all the Blooming Grove churches come together.
“Everyone is welcome, not just Blooming Grove folks,” Summers said. “Dr. O’Neal’s talent is becoming widely known.”
The performance will be 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21. FBC Blooming Grove is located at the corner of Second St. and Kerr St.
O’Neal wrote the play to honor the life of Fanny Crosby, a blind hymn writer born in 1820, who wrote such hymns as “Blessed Assurance,” “Jesus is Tenderly Calling,” and “I Am Thine, O Lord.” She performs the entire 54-minute production with her eyes closed for authenticity.
“Fanny Crosby comes alive onstage through Dr. Shellie O’Neal,” Summers said. “It is a memorable experience.”
O’Neal performed the play on her 40th birthday, June 22, 2012 at The Bowery Mission in New York City. The significance of that venue is the role it played in the life of Crosby, as the site where she gave an annual address during the latter part of her life.
Significant too, is the fact all churches in Blooming Grove are combining, uniting for this performance.
As Crosby had a real love for persons she could not see, O’Neal captures the life of Crosby in this play.
“I was taken with Shellie the first time I met her,” Summers said. “She is so bubbly, and so ‘alive’ as Fanny Crosby.”
