Sept. 25

Jury duty for Judge H.M. Daveport Jr’s County Court, scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, has been cancelled. Those called for service need not attend.



When Are We Going Home Ministry and Spirit Sent Music Ministry will meet at New Beginnings Fellowship in Blooming Grove at 6 p.m.



The Navarro County Republican Women will hold a luncheon at Republican Headquarters, 111-B West 3rd Ave. Social will be at 11:30 a.m., Lunch and Meeting, 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. Guest speaker is Frank Steed who will recount his experiences at the National Republican Convention in Tampa, Fla.  Make lunch reservations with Margarita Patterson, arcepark@peoplepc.com, or call (903) 874-8785.



Healthy Woman is back at Navarro Regional Hospital's Cafe 22 for an evening with Dr. Rebecca Guinn, OB/GYN from  5:30 to 6:30 p.m.  Dr. Guinn will be discussing methods of contraception and family planning, as well as other reasons for using contraception. Even if you think you have no need for a contraceptive, hormones in the form of birth control can help control mood swings, migraines, heavy and/or unpredictable periods and severe pain.   The Silver Dems will meet at 5 p.m. at the Navarro Democratic Party HQ at 416A W. 3rd Street (1 blk W of Court House).  We will be socializing and munching from plates that you bring so be generous with the fried chicken or sweet treats and wear your best smile. The groups main purpose is to discuss issues important to folks over 50 years young and educate ourselves on benefits from the government and civilian organizations that are available to senior citizens and veterans.

Kinsloe House will host Games Day on from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. All members interested in playing bridge, Scrabble, and other games are invited to attend. Sept. 27

The Corsicana Newcomers' Club will hold its monthly meeting at the Kinsloe House at 11 a.m. Tracy Watson will share the details of the cleaning and repair of the stained-glass windows in the First United Methodist Church. The Corsicana Apartment Association will have its monthly meeting at the Kinsloe House beginning at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. The program will be Elizabeth Borstad and Debbie Martin with the City of Corsicana engineering department. A presentation on home health services and pain management will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Cook Center Planetarium on the Navarro College campus. Navarro Regional Hospital’s Senior Circle will hold “Lunch and Learn” at the hospital classrooms from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sponsored by Light House Hospice, the speaker will be Margarita Kressen, MD on “The Importance of Bladder and Prostate Health.”



Sept. 29

VFW Post 3366 will have its Saturday night dance in the ballroom of the VFW Post from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight. Spur City Rounders will be playing all your favorite dance songs. Admission is free but donations will be accepted to help pay the cost of the band.



The Mildred Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual fundraiser at 5 p.m. with a fish fry, and live band at 7 p.m. There will also be a silent auction and raffle, and the entertainment will be provided by Ira Bradford and Bustin’ Loose. The Warehouse Living Arts Children’s Theatre will hold try outs from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. for “A Christmas Carol” to be performed in December. There are roles for ages 5 to 99 available.



Oct. 1

The Warehouse Living Arts Children’s Theatre will hold try outs from 6 to 8 p.m. for Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”  There are roles for ages 5 to 99. The Warehouse is located at 119 West Sixth Ave., Corsicana.



Oct. 1 - Oct. 26

The 32nd Annual Piecemakers’ Quilt Show will take place at the Warehouse Living Arts Center, 119 W. Sixth Ave. Admission is free. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. A quilt will be raffled off as part of the annual show. Oct. 2

The Blooming Grove Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. in the museum at 201 S. Fordyce in Blooming Grove.  Guest speakers will be the Hollingsworth sisters — Odessa Smith, Bernice Prater and Mavis Lusk.  The will discuss their school years and happenings in Blooming Grove in the 1930's and 1940's.  All interested people are invited to attend.  For more information call (903) 695-2724 or (903) 673-2635.



Oak Valley Crime Watch will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Oak Valley Community Center. If you bring a friend your name will go in to a drawing for door prize. The Speaker will be Texas Game Warden Jimmy Woolley. Please join us for a wonderful meal and fellowship. Bring a covered dish and/or dessert.



The Sunbeam Club will celebrate autumn with food, fun and fellowship at the Ennis IHOP. The whistle will blow at 11:30 a.m. for retired and working railroaders and any family members. Anyone who loves a train is also welcomed to join in this fellowship.



Oct. 3

The American Legional Ladies Auxiliary meeting will be held at the Legion, 632 N. Beaton, at 7 p.m. The Auxiliary will meet the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. For more information, call (903) 874-3938 after 4 p.m.



Frost Community Center's Covered Dish Lunch will be held at 11:30 a.m. the first Wednesday of each month.  Bring your favorite dish to share and enjoy the company of your neighbors in our community and surrounding areas.  All are welcome.



Kinsloe House presents its Fall Fashion Show, which is a highlight of each year. Local shops participating this year in the style show are Canterbury Court, Cassady’s, and Uniquely Yours. Carol Langham is chairman of this committee and committee members are Marsha Banks, Elonda Cassady, Pam Dunn, Carolyn French, Lynda Green, Jera O’Neal, Ruth Scott, Jo Skews and Arlene Stewart. Members are asked to make their reservations as soon as possible since this event sells out quickly. Please make reservations by Oct. 1.



Eureka Crime Watch will hold its regular monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. at the Eureka United Methodist Church. Please bring the cookies you have baked for the KAIROS Ministry to the meeting. Special guest will be Becky Burns, superintendent of Mildred ISD. Join your friends and neighbors for this informative meeting and enjoy the fellowship that follows. Refreshments will be served.



Oct. 4

The Blooming Grove Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. at the Blooming Grove Fire Station. District attorney Lowell Thompson will be the speaker. Light refreshments will be served and everyone is welcome.  



Oct 4-6

The Blooming Grove Historical Society will have a garage sale in the building across the street from the museum.  Thursday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.



Oct. 5

Cars of Navarro County will host “Hot Rods at O’Reilly’s” from 7 to 9 p.m. Located at 709 W. Seventh Ave., if you have cars, bikes, trucks, 4x4, project vehicles, hot rods, muscle cars, rat rods, whatever -- bring it. There will be music and awards. Come and go and have a great time.

 

Oct. 6

Eureka United Methodist Church, 8644 S. Hwy 287, will hold its Lord’s Acre celebration Oct. 6. Barbecue dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. The meal will consist of brisket, pinto beans,  potato salad, bread, pickles, onions and homemade pies with coffee or tea. Adult meals are $8, children age 3 and under are free. The country kitchen will be open from 10 a.m. to noon, 4 to 7 p.m., and the auction will be at 7:30 p.m. The drawing for the quilt will be held during the auction. Kinsloe House‘s First Sunday Lunch for October will be Oct. 7, 2012 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Everyone is invited. Oct. 8

The Republican Party Of Navarro County will hold its next Executive Committee Meeting on Monday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. at Republican Headquarters, 111-B West Third Avenue, in downtown Corsicana. State Sen. Brian Birdwell and U.S. Rep. Joe Barton will be the guest speakers. The purpose of the meeting is to unify the local party behind our Republican candidates and to push the Get-Out-The-Vote effort for the Nov. 6 General Election. A social time from 6:30 to 7 p.m. will be held, saluting elected officials, hosted by the Navarro County Republican Women. All registered voters are welcome to attend. Woodmen of the World Lodge 5 will have its meeting at 6 p.m. in the Lodge Hall at 200 Oak Lawn.  All members, their families and guests are cordially invited.

These classese will be held on the second Tuesday of each month from 5 to 7 p.m. The Diabetes Self-Management Comprehensive Program is an ongoing class for patients diagnosed with diabetes. Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at the Sirloin Stockade, 2508 W. Seventh Ave, Corsicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28,1961 and May 7,1975, or in ANY duty location between Aug. 5,1964 and May 7,1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with the application and dues. Members and guest are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting.



The Corsicana Emergency Corps., located at 416 South 12th Street in Corsicana, will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting at 7 p.m.  The general public is invited to attend.  Monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. For further information, please call (903)872-5072.



NARFE, National Association  of Active and Retired Federal Employees will hold its monthly meeting at Ryans Grill and Buffet in Waxahachie 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program will be information concerning the upcoming Health Insurance "open season." Oct. 12-14

Pelham Community Homecoming will celebrate its 55th annual Oct. 12-14. Friday night, Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m. will be a worship service with Rev. Charles Kelly as the master of ceremonies at the Wesley United Methodist Church, and Rev. Earnest Sample Sr. of West as speaker. On Saturday, Oct. 13, from 2 to 6 p.m. will be Pelham “Fun and Frolic.” Family and friends will enjoy activities at the Pelham Community History Museum. Bring your lawn chairs, Museum will be open for tours. The celebration will culminate on Sunday with homecoming worship services at 10:45 a.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church, Rev. Elgin Taylor, President Emeritus of Christians in Action International of Dallas speaking. Dinner will be served following services at the Pelham Community Center.



Oct. 13

Taste of Home tickets are now available at the Corsicana Daily Sun. This special event will be held at the Corsicana High School auditorium on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012. Food, fun and prizes begins at 1 p.m. with a variety of vendor booths and the cooking show begins at 4:30 p.m. VIP tickets are $35 each and includes a special meet and greet before the show with culinary specialist Jamie Dunn. Reserved seating tickets are $20 and general admission are $12. Over 800 were in attendance at our last Taste of Home show in the fall of 2009. Richland's First Semi-Annual Craft and Vendor Fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Richland Civic Center, 103 W. Boys and Girls Club of Navarro County will hold a 2012 Fall Festival from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club, 1000 East G.W. Jackson Ave., Corsicana.     When it comes to red carpet fashion, comedienne Joan Rivers is one of the more well-known, self-appointed authorities, and she had plenty to say during Thursday’s  9th Annual VOICE, Inc., Spring Luncheon and Style Show.
    More than 100 people attended the annual fundraising event at the Cook Center, which featured local models showing off fashions from area retailers while the show’s emcee, Ellie Weingardt, delivered witty commentary as a Rivers impersonator.

  • Grand Jury: Houston area rapper indicted locally on drug charges

     A multi-platinum selling rap artist from Houston was indicted Thursday by the Navarro County Grand Jury during its May panel. Wesley Eric Weston, known professionally as “Lil’ Flip,” was indicted on charges of possession of a controlled substance over 400 grams. Weston and another man, Dematrius Delane Richardson, were arrested by DPS troopers Oct. 18, 2012

  • Fire Marshal's Office: Panel had blast site access

    AUSTIN — The Texas State Fire Marshal's Office says a federal safety panel's investigators had access to the site of the West fertilizer plant blast that killed 15 people and injured about 200 others.

  • Texas has 8 of top 15 fastest-growing cities in US

    HOUSTON — New estimates show Texas has eight of the nation's 15 fastest-growing cities. Estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau show San Marcos in Central Texas led the way with a nearly 5 percent population boom between July 2011 and July 2012. That's the highest rate among U.S. cities with at least 50,000 people.

    It took less than 30 minutes for a devastating EF-5 tornado to make a shambles out of the community of Moore, Okla. on Monday afternoon.
    It took less than two days for Texas country musicians Scott Brown and Josh Ward to find themselves stopping in Corsicana on their way to Moore with three trailers full of relief supplies for the victims of the storm.
