Corsicana —
The outlook the new school year for the Corsicana Independent School District is positive and exciting, according to CISD Superintendent Dr. Diane Frost.
The atmosphere has been good in the first two weeks of the fall semester, with teachers and students settling in well.
News that an additional 100 students have registered on top of last year’s total of nearly 5,600 has also been welcomed.
Frost said her biggest personal challenge was to become more familiar with all the staff, both old and new, within the district.
Continual staff development is ongoing, and new skills and technology are being implemented across the district, added Frost.
“The mood on campuses is energetic and positive,” she said. “Staff members greeted happy and excited students who seemed very pleased to be returning to school following their summer break.
“The entire district staff worked hard to make the beginning of school a positive experience for every student and parent. This is going to be an excellent school year.”
“I consider our increased enrollment to be an early indicator of success for the district. We are very pleased to begin the school year with well over 100 additional students when compared with the enrollment at the end of the 2009-10 school year,” added Frost.
This year the district has encouraged more parental involvement, with the “parent portal” allowing parents more access to their kids grades and attendance records.
Parents are also volunteering at schools across the district and the new district web site is ready to be launched.
“I believe we will see improved communication between campuses and parents,” said Frost. “This makes a strong statement of support to both our teachers and students when they see parents involved in the learning process.”
Having only taken up the reins at CISD in mid-June, the superintendent has had much to contend with, not least familiarizing herself with the staff.
“My greatest challenge has been getting to know the staff,” she explained. “I am trying to see everyone individually and to get to know them. Each person in this District is very important to me, and I want them to know that their hard work and commitment to our students is appreciated.
“It’s very reassuring when I see someone in the grocery store or at a restaurant and remember their name, what they teach or what job they have, and which campus they’re on,” she said.
Spokesman for the district, Rob Ludwig, added his voice to the positive atmosphere within the district.
“I think the new staff has really come together well with the veteran staff,” said Ludwig. “You can see on the campuses they are excited to be there. It’s great to see the look on the children’s faces when they are excited to be part of the school, part of the school atmosphere.”
With the district gearing up for the Corsicana Tigers’ first home game of the season on Friday, all signs point to the new school year in Corsicana being well under way.
