Online exclusive: Q&A with Killdares founder Tim Smith

The Killdares are set to play the Palace at 6:30 p.m. Friday

Corsicana — After last year’s Relay for Life campground was unexpectedly rained out, The Killdares improvised and rocked the Navarro County Exposition Center. The show ended with the band accepting a key to the city from Mayor C.L. “Buster” Brown III.

Corsicana’s favorite “Celtic-rock” band is coming back to town for a St. Patrick’s Day weekend fundraiser.

The Killdares are set to play the Palace at 6:30 p.m. Friday with a street dance to follow from 9:30 to 11 p.m. General admission tickets are $25 at the Palace Theatre box office. For ticket information, call 903-874-7792.

Q: You guys played a rained-out Relay for Life event last year and ended up rocking the Navarro County Exposition center, what was like to play a livestock barn?

A:  You might be surprised at our history of playing livestock arenas. Throughout our tour history, given the fact that we play a lot of shows and fairs in a festival setting, we’re pretty used to winging it. We’ve even played on the same stage as Skid Row (Yes, that Skid Row) at where else than a livestock arena. Still last year’s rain rescue show at the expo center had an energy that is hard to plan for. A very memorable experience.

Q: At the event you were given a key to the city by Mayor Brown. You have played here numerous times, how do you feel about the reception you get in Corsicana?

A: The reception we receive in Corsicana is what you hope to get every night as performer. It’s one thing to play all the big cities across the U.S., but sometimes it’s the smaller communities like Corsicana that truly appreciate music and really know what it means to support a band like us. Then on top of that, to be given the key to the city. That was the first time we’ve ever has such a gesture like that bestowed on us, we are simply honored to be given that much attention.

Q: What can fans expect at the coming fundraising event? New songs, old favorites, covers?

A: The Palace Theatre always holds a special place in our hearts. It was the first theater of that size that the band played in, and it was also the site of where we filmed some of our first live promotional footage, so to be able to return to the venue is very cool. The show that night will, of course, contain a lot of the band’s standards, but will also feature some new stuff. We are currently touring in support of our brand new DVD/double live record called “Up Against the Lights” which features four previously unreleased songs, plus a lot more. So it should be a great night for all.

The new Killdares live DVD/double live album is the only place where fans can get versions of show stoppers like "Whiskey In The Jar", re-imagined versions of old faves like "Blitzkrieg Bop," four previously unreleased songs like the brand new single "The Undertow," plus rare live versions of songs not always played in concert.

When the school bell rings today, it will signal for most the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation.
But for Dana Griffin, it will mark the end of his 30-year career teaching ag science at Corsicana High School, the only job he’s had since graduating from college.
Though he is excited about his new horizons, this day will most likely be bittersweet, as 30 years of animals, ag projects, and kids — it’s always been about the kids — draws to a close.

“We called it Good Friday, Better Monday,” said Susan Johnson, spokeswoman for the district.
