CORSICANA - Columbia Manufacturing is closing its two Corsicana locations. Company officials confirmed the closure Thursday in an interview with the Daily Sun.
Martin Goodman, one of Columbia's owners, declined to comment further on the Corsicana closure, nor would he confirm how the company's California plant would be impacted, but did say "California is linked to whatever goes on in Texas, so it's an overall business decision."
According to an email from Corsicana Mayor Chuck McClanahan, the company cited declining market share, increased competition, and decreasing demand as reasons for the move.
While the operation has downsized recently according to the Mayor's letter, the company has had as many as 70 employees during seasonal times. Goodman said Thursday there were about 10 employees still working locally as the plant wraps up its operations.
Columbia Manufacturing joins several other industries that have closed or moved this year, including Home Depot Distribution Center, Jeld-Wen, Lance Foods, and Sew Team, a manufacturer of school uniforms.
It was announced at Thursday's Corsicana and Navarro County Chamber of Commerce meeting that Corsicana Bedding had offered employment to the displaced workers from the Sew Team plant, and that a number of the employees there had gone to work at Corsicana Bedding.
