Corsicana — Westminster Presbyterian Church, 312 N. 13th St., Corsicana, across from the County Courthouse, will hold an Ash Wednesday Service at 7 p.m. Feb. 22. (903) 874-3781. Also, on Feb. 21 at 11:45 a.m. will be XYZ’s (Extra Years of Zest) February meeting, in which the theme “Art: I Know What I Like” will be illustrated by each member bringing a piece of art special to them, whether it be a painting, ceramic piece, sculpture, needlepoint, whatever has significance to you. The pieces of art will be displayed and shared. The event will take place at Westminster Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. Bring a salad, vegetable or dessert, entrée is provided. The entire community is invited so come and invite your friends for a lovely lunch, good fellowship and an entertaining and interesting program. Mildred Baptist Church will host a free movie night when the movie, “Courageous,” is shown at Mildred Baptist Church at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19 in the “Big Mac” gym. The movie “Courageous” tells the story of four men with one calling: to serve and protect. When tragedy hits home, these men are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering. Can a newfound urgency help these dads draw closer to their children; their family?

This is certainly an event for the entire family.  Hot dogs, popcorn and other movie snack items will be available, all free of charge.  Dress is casual, and feel free to bring your lawn chairs. Let this be your personal invitation to join Mildred Baptist Church for this special event.



Bethany Baptist Church, 1900 Mulberry Lane, Corsicana, invites your church family to its Usher Annual Service honoring Mother Cora Allen and all ushers. Please come and help us encourage all ushers for their humble service to God and His people. The service will be at 3 p.m. Feb. 19. The Rev. Larry Polk Sr., the pastor of Second Mission Baptist Church will preach the gospel message. “Serving in the House” is the theme, Luke 10:38-42. Come looking to be blessede of the Lord Jesus.



The Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, 2105 East Jones Ave., is celebrating its Annual Women and Men Program at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 19 with the Women’s Program “What’s in your Apron Pockets?” Pastor Alfred Cox Jr. will bring the spoken word. The Mt. Olive Men’s Program will be at 3 p.m. with “What is Man?” Psalm 8:4. Guest church will Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church of Rosser, and their pastor William Williford will bring the message. Please come and join us on these glorious occasions.



The Salvation Army and Sgt. Toby and Linda Romack would like to invite everyone to come and worship Sunday at 212 E. First Ave. Pool Ministries will be the special guest bringing their ministry in music. Also, members of the Christian Motorcyclist Association will share in the service. Services begin at 9 a.m. with coffee, donuts and fellowship, followed at 10 a.m. with Sunday School, and 11 a.m. worship service.  Straight Way Missionary Baptist Church, 400 S. 15th, will celebrate Black History Month at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012 when the Youth Department will be in charge of the morning service. Sis. D. Jackson and Sis. T. Wade are the youth sponsors. Evangelist S. Gatlin is minister of music for the youth. Guest speaker for the hour is Mr. Alexander Williams, better known as Coach Williams. His qualifications and accomplishments are 43 years of public school service, member of the national association of secondary principals, and Texas association of secondary principals, certified high school counselor, outstanding assistant principal award, principal of Corsicana High School, State champion football coach, state champion runner-up baseball coach, Coach of the  Year 1968, Teacher of the Year 1963, four years in U.S. Navy with honorable discharge and Korean War veteran. Hs is also in the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame. Williams is a deacon and Sunday School teacher at the Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church, Waco. Pastor A. E. Smith and the Straight Way Church family invites the public out to help celebrate Black History Month.

Lone Star Cowboy Church of Navarro County, located at 4495 W. State Hwy. 22, invites all to join for its Sunday Church Services starting at 10 a.m. We have nursery for babies through age 2 years and activities for 3 and 4 year olds. Children ages 5 through 12, are invited to meet in the children’s building for Children’s Church.  We also have the following activities, Monday Nights at 7 p.m., Mounted Shooting, Tuesday Night 7 p.m., Team Roping and Women’s fellowship. 7 p.m. each Wednesday is Bible Study and Youth Service. Barrel racing is held at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Youth Movie Night will be 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 18.

Life in the Word Bible Church located at 1408 N. Beaton where Emma Brown-Jessie is the pastor, will have its Youth Ministry will celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 12 noon on Feb. 18, 2012. Horn of Total Man Ministry. Mrs. Vergie Brown is a born again, blood-washed, baptized believer. She is the wife of Elder W.G. Brown. They have been married 47 years. She is mother of four children; the late Gerald L. Brown, Valorie Brown Horn, Willie B. Brown and Terrance D. Brown. She is also the grandmother of 15 and great-grandmother of two. She received the Lord as her savior on May 17, 1974, and has always been a woman of faith, prayer and integrity. She has served in many capacities in the Taylor’s Memorial Total Man Ministry. She was over the youth department, served on the missionary board, pastor’s aide, choir and mother’s board. She was recently appointed as administrative assistant in the ministry. Now the Lord is making her latter days her best days and she is yet on the battlefield for the Lord. She would rather wear out than rust out for Jesus. Mrs. Brown is thankful and grateful for all of the many blessings from above and will continue to give God all the praise, glory and honor that is due Him because He is worthy.

    When the school bell rings today, it will signal for most the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation.
    But for Dana Griffin, it will mark the end of his 30-year career teaching ag science at Corsicana High School, the only job he’s had since graduating from college.
    Though he is excited about his new horizons, this day will most likely be bittersweet, as 30 years of animals, ag projects, and kids — it’s always been about the kids — draws to a close.

  • Schools ready for summer

    With a nearly balmy winter, local school districts faced the end of the year with so-called “snow days” still in their pockets. Corsicana schools will spend one of those bad weather days Monday, taking off Memorial Day.
    The other free day was spent on April 9, the Monday after Easter.
    “We called it Good Friday, Better Monday,” said Susan Johnson, spokeswoman for the district.
