June 7

City of Blooming Grove will hold its monthly city council meeting at 6:30 p.m. at Blooming Grove City Hall, 200 S. Fordyce. For more information, call (903) 695-2711.



Corsicana Masonic Lodge will have a stated meeting at 7:30 p.m. A meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. All Masons are invited.



Piecemakers’ Quilt Guild will meet at Westhill Church of Christ, 3400 State Highway 22. Food and fellowship will begin at 9:30 a.m. The business meeting will be called to order at 10 a.m. Guests are welcome. The program will be given by the MODA fabric representative. “Sit and Sew” will follow the business meeting. Projects for possible work will include personal projects, community quilts, or Quilts of Valor. Some kits/fabric for children’s quilts will be available. Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at Sirloin Stockade, 2508 W. Seventh Ave., Corsicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28, 1961, and May 7, 1975, or in any duty location between Aug. 5, 1964, and May 7, 1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with application and dues. Members and guests are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting.

Kerens Independent School District will accept applications for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays through June11 at the Kerens Elementary School office. Parents of students should bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate, Social Security card and immunization record. For more information, call (903) 396-7941. Students not qualifying for free lunch may pay $100 a month for all-day pre-kindergarten.



June 12

Sons of American Legion will host a flag retirement ceremony at 2 p.m. at the American Legion Post, 632 N. Beaton St. If you have flags that need to be retired, bring them by daily after 4 p.m. to the post. For more information, call after 4 p.m. to (903) 874-3938.



Angels of Corsicana will meet at 9 a.m. at 1020 N. Business 45. If you have items to donate for supporting the U.S. troops, you may bring them to the meeting or you can drop them off at the American Legion Post 22, 632 N. Beaton St. after 4 p.m. daily. Many boxes are mailed every month to the troops. If you would like to make a donation to cover the postage, it would be greatly appreciated. Richland Neighborhood Watch Program will have a picnic at 1 p.m., across from the Richland Civic Center. Bring the children and join in. There will be door prizes, free hot dogs, chips and drinks.



Navarro County Genealogical Society will meet at 10 a.m. at the Nancy Roberts Meeting Room of the Corsicana Public Library, 100 N. 12th St. The topic will be “Photos: Restoration, Preservation, Archiving” by Kevin Painter, owner of The Photo Shop in Corsicana. Members are encouraged to attend and bring a friend. The public is invited.

The squadron will review the results for the 12th annual Corsicana Airsho held in May, and will make plans for its own PT-19, the Pride of Corsicana. Dawson Saddle Club playday series will be held the Dawson arena, located on State Highway 31, Dawson. Remaining dates are June 12 and 26, July 10 and 24, Aug. 14 and 28, Sept. 11 and 25. Shakers and Scrapers is a diverse group with a common interest of cars and a desire to help local charities. An annual car show is held during Derrick Days in support of a charity that the club has decided needs its help. Pickett Riding Club will have its first show (buckle series) at 2 p.m. at the outdoor arena in Streetman. There will be 6 and under, 7 to 9, 10 to 12, 13 to 17, and 18 and over. There will be cloverleaf and straightaway barrels, flag race, speed race, potato race, poles and keyhole. Cost will be $2 exhibition and $4 event. Negative coggins required. “Take a Stand Against Child Abuse” Navarro County ride will be held with the start and end at Mildred City Hall, located on Farm-to-Market Road 637. Registration and late free breakfast will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Suggested donations are: motorcycle rider $20, with passenger $35; bicycle rider $10, with passenger $15; however any donation is acceptable. At 11:45 a.m., there will be a blessing for bikes and blessing for children; 11:55 a.m. balloon release; noon will be kick stands up, followed by the ride; with late lunch and entertainment from 2 to 4 p.m. Raffle tickets will be available with a drawing at 4 p.m. You may pre-register by June 15 by an RSVP to (903) 695-4416 or e-mail melissagracecovered@yahoo.com.

    Texas Slabs’ jerky has issued a voluntary recall notice, effective Friday, according to proprietor Scott McGinty.
    The company makes flavored beef jerky and is headquartered out of Mansfield. Some of the jerky was distributed in Corsicana in January.
