Corsicana —
The City of Corsicana has been given a $723,900 grant from the state to build a road from the new Cinergy Cinemas back to U.S. 287 around Russell Stover. The road will look like a small loop swinging from the Home Depot south and then back up to U.S. 287, giving better access to the cinema.
The entertainment complex, which will include an arcade, go cart track, and miniature golf course, is already under construction and expects to open by Labor Day.
Having the new road will serve more than the theater, according to Connie Standridge, city manager for Corsicana.
“It’s an extension for the Corsicana Crossing road. The cinema is sponsoring the application but ultimately it would benefit the entire area,” she said. “We’ve been waiting for it. It’s excellent.”
The project is already undergoing preliminary engineering, and it could be ready to let to bid by fall, said Elizabeth Borstad, city engineer. It’s a long street, so will take up almost all of the money, she said.
“It’s over half a mile around there,” Borstad pointed out. “That will be most of it, if not all of it.”
Each year the state distributes $10 million in federal community development money through the Texas Capital Fund. The money is given out through a competitive application process to small Texas cities, explained Veronica Obregon, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Agriculture, which oversees the grants.
“The Texas Capital Fund is a smart investment that rejuvenates the economies of Texas communities,” Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples said. “This award will help enhance economic development in Corsicana, proving that great things are possible when Texans partner with Texans.”
The grant is an infrastructure development award, which can be used for projects that include water and sewer lines, road improvements, fiber optic lines and railroad spurs. It is expected to create about 30 new jobs in Corsicana.
“This program allows cities like Corsicana to create the necessary infrastructure to encourage economic development,” said Corsicana Mayor C. L. Brown said. “The Texas Capital Fund allows us to significantly expand our employment base.”
Because the project is expanding a road into an area that’s currently just an empty field, it’s hoped that it will also allow for more development in the Corsicana Crossings area, according to city officials.
“Corsicana appreciates and applauds the Texas Department of Agriculture for awarding these much-needed funds to the city, which will generate more robust job opportunities in rural Texas,” State Rep. Byron Cook said. “Access to the new major retail and entertainment project will not only offer more quality retail services to local residents, but hopefully will encourage interstate travelers to visit our great city as well.”

But for Dana Griffin, it will mark the end of his 30-year career teaching ag science at Corsicana High School, the only job he’s had since graduating from college.
Though he is excited about his new horizons, this day will most likely be bittersweet, as 30 years of animals, ag projects, and kids — it’s always been about the kids — draws to a close. -
