Parents or guardians of students in Kindergarten to fifth grade are invited to attend an informational session on Thursday regarding the Gifted and Talented (GT) Program at CISD at 6 p.m. in the Sam Houston Elementary School Auditorium.
The Gifted and Talented students are those who perform at or show the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment, and who exhibit high performance capability in intellectual, creative, or artistic area; possess an unusual capacity for leadership; or excel in a specific academic field.
Currently, students in the GT program on all campuses in grades first through fifth attend a pull-out GT class one full day each week on a common campus — Sam Houston Elementary.
For those students and parents who are interested in the program, nomination is the first step in the process. Parents, teachers and peers may make nominations. If a parent nominates a child, the child’s teacher will be asked to provide nomination information to supplement the application. All students who are nominated for the GT program will be screened, provided parent/guardian permission for testing. The screening phase does include several instruments, including both quantitative and qualitative measures.
A campus selection and placement committee reviews the data and makes a final decision based on analysis of the collected information.
To learn more about the GT program parents/guardians are encouraged to attend the information session, or may contact Laura Green at lgreen@cisd.org.
