Corsicana —
Generally, when law enforcement arrests someone, it’s “out in the field” somewhere, and then they take the bad guys to jail.
This past weekend, however, the bad guys made it easy — they showed up at the jail first, and were then arrested.
Three such individuals are facing additional charges this week, because of the actions of Navarro County jail personnel, said Sheriff Elmer Tanner.
Tanner said the three individuals — all of them sentenced to weekend jail time for misdemeanor offenses — found themselves facing additional charges when they reported to the jail for their weekend lock-up. All three, Tanner said, brought the additional charges on themselves.
“It’s kind of an odd situation,” explained Tanner.
Two of the offenders were arrested when they arrived on a charge of bringing a prohibited substance into the jail — one with a substance believed to be marijuana, the other for a suspected controlled substance. A third man checking in for weekend jail time was charged with public intoxication, Tanner said.
“All three of these individuals had been previously convicted of misdemeanor offenses in Navarro County,” Tanner said. “The person with the public intoxication pled ‘no contest,’ and the other two individuals were charged with prohibited substances in a correctional facility and were set bonds of $25,000 each,” he said.
“Those prohibited substances (charges) turn a misdemeanor offense into a third-degree felony,” Tanner said.
Tanner praised his jailers for their actions in the arrests.
“I want to commend my officers in the correctional facility and supervisors that were able to prevent these substances from entering into the jail,” Tanner said.
“We’re going to be diligent in our efforts,” Tanner continued. “We’re not going to tolerate people introducing or trying to introduce (substances) into our facility.”
