Hanson honored as CNHI's 2012 Publisher of the Year

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Bill Hanson, publisher of the News and Tribune of Jeffersonville, Ind., is Community Newspaper Holding Inc.’s first-ever Publisher of the Year, an award that recognizes his leadership and success in a crowded media market. CNHI is also the parent company of the Corsicana Daily Sun.

CNHI President and CEO Donna Barrett delivered the award at the News and Tribune's office today. She commended Hanson's business results, achieved in a relatively short time, and his newspaper's award-winning journalism. He has been publisher in Jeffersonville for three years.

“This newspaper has long given the community outstanding products and unmatched customer service,” said Barrett. “But this market a stone's throw from Louisville, Ky., poses unique advertising challenges. When Bill moved here, I told him if he found a formula for both business and editorial success, I would name him 'Publisher of the Year.' Sure enough, he and his team rose to the task, and I'm here to make good on that promise. I commend Bill for his remarkable blend of spirit, skill and leadership.”

CNHI's Publisher of the Year prize is a special honor bestowed at the discretion of the company's president. It is not an annual prize but rather one that marks unique achievement.

Hanson was named publisher of The Evening News in Jeffersonville in February 2010. A year later, he oversaw the merger of his newspaper with The Tribune in New Albany and assumed the role of publisher of the combined News and Tribune. The newspapers had shared a common website, newsandtribune.com, for several years.

Under Hanson's leadership, the News and Tribune earned Newspaper of the Year honors for its division in the 2011 Best of CNHI contest. Judges lauded the paper’s sense of community and efforts to engage readers. Last December, the News and Tribune collected eight awards from the Hoosier State Press Association, including a first-place prize for coverage of tornadoes in Clark County.

Hanson started his newspaper career more than 25 years ago as a sports reporter and agriculture editor in Nebraska. He has worked in newsrooms, advertising departments and as general manager at newspapers in Nebraska, Wyoming and South Dakota. He spent eight years as publisher of the Times-Tribune in Corbin, Ky., before moving to Jeffersonville.

CNHI is a leading provider of local news and information in more than 150 communities in 23 states. Its publications include award-winning newspapers, websites and magazines. The Corsicana Daily Sun is a CNHI publication.
