American Legion Post 22 will hold an executive committee meeting at 6 p.m. and Monthly Regular meeting at 7 p.m. They will have an open election for post officers. They invite all members to attend this meeting.

Bazette-Prairie Point Cemetery Association  will be holding its annual picnic on the cemetery grounds at noon on Saturday, July 16. All guests are invited to bring their favorite covered dishes and lawn chairs.



July 18

Barry Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. at the Barry Methodist Church. Josh Tackett, the newly appointed Navarro County District Clerk, will be the speaker. Light refreshments will follow. Everybody is invited.



July 19

The Warehouse Living Arts Center Theatre will open the family-friendly musical comedy, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” on Thursday, July 21, at 7:30 p.m. Perfect entertainment for the entire family, the story and music explores the lives of Charlie Brown and the “Peanuts” gang. The show runs July 21 to July 30. Evening performances on July 21, 22, 23, 26, 28, 29, 30 begin at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday matinee on July 24 begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are now on sale at the Warehouse Living Arts Center. July 23

Corsicana Police Officers Wives’ Auxiliary are hosting “Back the Blue,” a motorcycle ride beginning with registration at 10 a.m., and kick-stands up at 11 a.m. at I.O.O.F. Park, 1400 N. 45th St., Corsicana. Registration is $20 per bike or car, and the group will ride through Navarro County ending at Harbor Inn Restaurant on Richland Chambers Lake. A donation of school supplies would be appreciated. For more information, call (903) 879-0566.



July 25

Not-for-profit agencies board member training, “Give, Get or Get Off: What in the World is a Board Member Supposed to Do?” will be offered from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church’s Fellowship Hall, 312 N. 13th St. in Corsicana. Registration is $10, payable to the United Way of Navarro County. Professor Gaynor Yancey of Baylor University’s School of Social Work will conduct the training, which will include topics such as “Roles and Purposes of Executive Directors and Board Members” and lack of focus during meetings. Oak Valley School will be holding a 30 year annual reunion at 2211 Oak Valley Lane in Corsicana. A brief business meeting will be held before lunch. Aug. 1

Navarro College Adult Education Program is offering free ESL and GED classes in Freestone, Limestone, and Navarro Counties. Interested students 17 years and under need to contact the Navarro College Office of Adult Education at (903) 875-7464. Interested students 18 and older need to attend a registration workshop. Workshops available are: 5:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, at Gibbs Memorial Library, located at 305 E.     When the school bell rings today, it will signal for most the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation.
    But for Dana Griffin, it will mark the end of his 30-year career teaching ag science at Corsicana High School, the only job he’s had since graduating from college.
    Though he is excited about his new horizons, this day will most likely be bittersweet, as 30 years of animals, ag projects, and kids — it’s always been about the kids — draws to a close.

  • Schools ready for summer

    With a nearly balmy winter, local school districts faced the end of the year with so-called “snow days” still in their pockets. Corsicana schools will spend one of those bad weather days Monday, taking off Memorial Day.
    The other free day was spent on April 9, the Monday after Easter.
    “We called it Good Friday, Better Monday,” said Susan Johnson, spokeswoman for the district.

Jones serves as co-pastor of the Reunited Christian Fellowship Church in Huntsville, where they both reside.

    Union High Volunteer Fire Department will hold a fundraiser at 6 p.m. at the fire station on FM 638. The menu consists of fried chicken, macaroni salad, green beans, rolls, tea and dessert, and there will be entertainment following the meal. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children.
