The County Court jury panel called for 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2010, has been dismissed by County Judge H.M. Davenport Jr. The County Court cases set for jury trials the week of July 27, have been disposed of without the necessity of a jury panel. Anyone receiving notice for jury service for County Court for this date will not need to appear.
Carter Bloodcare “High School Summer Gives” blood donations, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Navarro College Student Activity Center. Students 16 and older who donate blood will receive T-shirts, goodie bags with coupons. Students who are 16 need written consent from a parent to donate, while people 17 and older can donate independently. All donors must have a photo ID.

Free continuing education courses for the insurance industry will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Corsicana Public Library, 100 N. 12th St. The first course, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. will cover contaminated buildings, focusing on post-storm buildings. The second course, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will cover deodorization of buildings, also with emphasis on how a restorer might respond to fire and water damaged buildings, including power failures, decomposing animals in crawl spaces, death and crime scene clean-ups and pet stains. The courses will be taught by certified instructors with ServPro, disaster recovery experts. Professional fire fighters and real estate professionals may also wish to attend this seminar. The Pearce Museum will present a free showing of “Dances With Wolves” at 7 p.m. in the Cook Center, 3100 W. Collin St. In addition, the museum will be open and free to the public that evening from 6 to 8 p.m. The public is urged to bring blankets, sleeping bags, lawn chairs, or beanbags because it will be projected on the big wall in the Cook Center Atrium – just like an outdoor movie, but with air conditioning. Event co-sponsor Two Doors Down Coffee House will be on site with coffees available for sale. Cookies and other easy-to-handle snacks will also be available. To take part in the Pearce Museums’ movie night, please RSVP by calling (903) 875-7642 before July 28. The museum must have a minimum number of participants to show the film. The Kevin Costner movie is rated PG-13 and was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

A classic car and motorcycle show to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will take place from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Chili’s parking lot, 2201 S. Interstate 45, Corsicana. Categories include classic cars, motorcycles and race cars. The team that raises the most donations will win a dinner. All proceeds raised will go to St. Jude’s to benefit children with cancer.
Oak Valley Crime Watch will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Oak Valley Community Center. Ray Jacobs will be the guest speaker, and he will talk about adult probation and community service. Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at the Sirloin Stockade, 2508 West Seventh Avenue, Corisicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28,1961, and May 7,1975, or in ANY duty location between Aug. 5, 1964 and May 7, 1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with the application and dues. Members and guest are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting.

Wesley Johnson with the NBA and a graduate of Corsicana High will speak at the 4th annual Back to School/Stay in School rally at Fullerton-Garitty Park. The event, which will also feature prizes, free school supplies and backpacks as well as entertainment, will go from 9 a.m. to noon at the park. Free transportation to the park will be provided, with 8:30 a.m. pickups from each of the Corsicana elementary schools as well as the Northwest Housing complex. Prizes this year include I-Tunes cards, certificates for school clothing, sports equipment and more. Angels of Corsicana will meet at 9 a.m. at 1020 N. Business 45. If you have items to donate for the U.S. troops, please bring it to the meeting or drop it off at the American Legion Post 22, 632 N. Doug Lane, who was superintendent of schools at Mildred Independent School District for 24 years until retiring in 2011, died Sunday at a hospital in Tyler. He was 70 years old.

Commissioners to meet Tuesday
The Navarro County Commissioners Court is scheduled to meet in special session at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, in the county courtroom of the Navarro County Courthouse.
