County Tax Assessor/Collector Russell Hudson shared some good news with county commissioners at their Monday meeting, with the announcement that Gail Smith has been certified as a Registered Tax Assessor.
The certification is not an easy one, Hudson said. It requires significant study and experience, and series of rigid exams.
“You have to have an RTA in any office that calculates and sets tax rates,” Hudson explained. Hudson himself has the RTA certification. Now the county has two such certified assessors.
“When we give out effective rates, roll-back rates, all that information, it has to be done by somebody who is either working toward or has completed their licensing,” he said.
Hudson said the program is a five-year process that includes eight courses of study, and exams successfully passed at the end of each course.
Then, there is a three-hour, multiple choice exam that has to be passed for the completed licensing.
Hudson presented Smith with a plaque acknowledging her certification at the Monday meeting.
Smith is the assistant tax assessor/collector for the county, an 11-year veteran of the office. She’s been helping Hudson with some of the tax computations annually during her studies, and may play a larger role in future tax seasons.
Hudson said while larger counties may have a number of registered assessors on staff, most counties the size of Navarro County have one, maybe two such licensees on staff.
Hudson said he’s encouraged all the members of his office to seek continued education and training in their positions.
“It just makes them better at their jobs to know the laws and rules behind the things we do.”
