Corsicana —
Utilizing the city’s trolley car, several members of the Keep Corsicana Beautiful committee toured Corsicana’s entry ways and main thoroughfares Friday looking for opportunities for improvement.
The group is still in organizational stages, but hopes to make strides soon to create a community-wide effort to beautify Corsicana.
There was a lot of talk about community pride, partnering with other organizations and events, and perhaps foremost on the minds of the committee, education.
“There is work to do with litter education in our community,” said Laura Capehart, the committee’s leader. “We should make that a big part of every event we do.”
The goal of Keep Corsicana Beautiful is not to organize cleaning events solely, but to create a culture of responsible, diligent commitment to making the community a more attractive place to live, work and play.
Members aboard the trolley ventured to a number of points in the city, departing downtown and traveling south down 15th Street. The trip came back up south Business 45, then south on U.S. Highway 287 and back, and east past Interstate 45 on State Highway 31. The group also traveled north on Business 45 almost to I-45, then back and out West Hwy. 31 to the Texas Department of Transportation building. The trolley did go through construction on Seventh Avenue.
“One of the things we didn’t see was opportunities not on the major thoroughfares,” said Connie Standridge, city manager and a member of the committee.
Most of the opportunities had to do with litter, overgrown vegetation, vacant lots and unsightly structures.
Standridge said there are a few fundamental things landowners could do to make a vast difference in the appearance of Corsicana: keep it clean, and mow.
“It makes a big difference when you ask each property owner to help with that,” she said.
Capehart mentioned several programs geared at generating enthusiasm in any Keep Corsicana Beautiful efforts, spanning from adults to school kids.

Police department open house Tuesday
The renovation of the Corsicana Police Department got a bit more involved than it was originally intended to. An error with some concrete resulted in water flooding city hall, and forcing replacement of carpeting and flooring. As well, the renovations quickly led to renovations of the municipal court, as well.

Bowie School involves all in ACS Recess Relay
For the third straight year, Bowie students and faculty have “Teamed Up to Fight Cancer” — and each team was armed with a catchy name, a sports theme, and its own banner and sporty accessories. Bowie Elementary School is an important part of the success of American Cancer Society’s Navarro County Relay for Life. This year, they raised $4,100.52 for cancer research, bringing their three-year total to over $15,000.
