Jerry’s been pulling our leg. I was convinced that T.O. was going to be a Cowboy next season.
Combine that with Wade returning as head coach/defensive coordinator/team spokesman and next season looked like a good time to play Sunday afternoon golf.
Boy, were we fooled. T.O. is off to Buffalo.
He is, as I write, following the trail of breadcrumbs left by Pacman and Tank. “Bye, Terrell. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.”
If you think about it, Jerry had to pull the wool over our eyes. He had to see if there was anyone who would give him anything for the troubled wideout. No one would give him anything at all. A lot of callers on talk radio are currently bashing Jerry for getting nothing. I don’t buy that. He gained a lot.
Lots of callers and bloggers are wailing over giving up one of the top receivers in the NFL. Who have they been watching?
Terrell Owens averaged four receptions and 53 yards per game last season. Are those the numbers of a Top 5 receiver?
They’re more like the numbers for a No. 2 on a team. T.O. couldn’t get off the line, couldn’t get open, had problems catching the ball and ran very poor routes.
Surely Jerry could have gotten a seventh round draft choice for Owens, couldn’t he?
Nope.
Would you give up a seventh rounder for him? Slow down and think for a minute.
T.O. was due a $3.1 million roster bonus come June. His salary was over $6 million. You’d only give up a low draft choice, but you’d have to pay out $9.7 million next season for four receptions and 53 yards per game. How does $150,000 per catch grab you?
As Norm Hitzges mentioned on the radio, a lot of people in New Orleans wanted to sell their houses right after Katrina. There weren’t many takers there either.
Besides, who would take him even as a free agent with a new low salary? Okay, Oakland will take anyone, but who else?
Does a disciplinarian coach take him? Does a rebuilding team looking for youth take him? I hope he goes to either New York or Washington (Philly has learned their lesson). A little poison within the division can’t hurt.
Many people are saying that the ‘Boys should have kept him. They’re saying that Jerry is taking a $9 million hit on the salary cap.
Wrong!
Actually, the only hit on the salary cap is less than $700,000 or what Demarcus Ware left as a tip at Morton’s Steak House. Maybe there is enough room under the salary cap to pick up a Torry Holt or an Amani Toomer with enough change left over to pick up a safety or an offensive lineman.
Maybe now Jason Garrett can call a game without worrying about trying to get the ball to a pouting T.O.
The Cowboys have a huge offensive line and three outstanding running backs. Why should they come out throwing in the first quarter like they’re already behind? The last two Super Bowl winners have been run first teams. Do you think Jerry noticed?
Besides, they do have what should be a good wide receiver in Roy Williams. They have the best tight end in football. They have a prospect in Miles Austin, and just maybe, Patrick Crayton can go back to playing football instead of scratching T.O.’s back.
Yep, Jerry had us all fooled. He’s a sly one. Now we know to take whatever Jerry says with a grain of salt. Remember, it was only early January when Jerry said that Wade Phillips was the man to guide this team. (Wink, wink) Gottcha, Jerry.
