The difference: Dawson’s running game pounded Axtell and ate the clock all night. The Bulldogs rushed 65 times, gaining 425 rushing yards.
Standouts: Bulldog defenders Oscar Padron, Tyler Kimbriel, Kirk Williams, Michael Passini, Trevor Carr, Tyler Green and Troy Trusty camped out in the Axtell backfield, delivering big hit after big hit. Williams recorded a forced fumble which was recovered by Trusty. Senior Dustin Sanders came up big defensively, picking off two Longhorn passes in the contest. RB Alex Shaw rushed for 178 yards on 19 carries with a score. Michael Vaughn picked up 127 rushing yards of his own, and scored Dawson’s first two touchdowns on runs of 39 and 51 yards in the first quarter. Bulldog RB Justin Oliver caught his team’s only completed pass, a 26-yard strike from Trey Tennison on a juggling catch that showed great concentration. Oliver also rushed for 72 yards on 12 attempts.
Game notes: The Bulldogs finished a perfect run through district play in Friday night’s dominant performance. Dawson took a 20-0 lead into halftime, and continued to smother the Axtell offense throughout all four quarters.
Stat of the game: Dawson’s defense held the Longhorns to -1 rushing yards in the first half, and gave up only 100 on the ground for the night. Most of those yards came on Jacob Kubitza’s 68-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Records: Axtell 3-7, 1-5. Dawson 8-1, 6-0.
