On Monday, Larry and Janice Evans had the dedication of their new house, a project which took the volunteers of Habitat for Humanity just about a year.
It’s also a project that the two of them worked on throughout the work period. Janice worked on it almost every Saturday, while Larry, whose knees both need surgery, worked on it as he could.
“This is really the answer to a prayer,” Janice said.
The couple is employed by Family Services. Larry is the assistant manager, while Janice does the data entry. They work five days a week at the charity, then worked one day each week on building their house. Sunday ended up being the day when Janice could catch up on laundry and cleaning.
“Now that the house is finished, I can go back to church,” she said, grinning.
The couple has been living in a rented house on G.W. Jackson Avenue that’s in pretty bad shape, Janice noted.
“It’ll be nice to walk on even floors, and our furniture won’t be leaning,” she said.
For Larry, a U.S. Navy veteran, this is the start of something new, and he’s optimistic.
“It’s a fresh start,” he said. “I’m thrilled about it.”
The house is Habitat’s sixth project, and although it took a while, it was worth it. It’s a three-bedroom house with all the appliances and fixtures, two bathrooms and a small yard. It’s wheelchair accessible, which will allow their friends who are handicapped to come visit them for the first time.
One of the volunteers who worked on the project is LaTonya Jimerson and her three teen-aged children. Potential homeowners must put in hundreds of hours of volunteer work as their contribution to the project, and Jimerson was a regular on the site of the Evans house.
Her house will go faster, predicted Daniel Lima, the construction supervisor.
“We’re starting the next one in January,” he said. “We’re trying to get the building where we can take summers off because it’s so hard to get volunteers in the summer.”
In introducing the various board members and contributors to the project, Bob Kingman praised in particular the Navarro College students who have turned out to be so invaluable to the non-profit agency. Habitat passed the 1,000 volunteers mark on this project, Kingman said.
“To me, it was a shock to see that many people come out on their day off,” Janice Evans said. “This house has a lot of love in it.”

Police department open house Tuesday
The renovation of the Corsicana Police Department got a bit more involved than it was originally intended to. An error with some concrete resulted in water flooding city hall, and forcing replacement of carpeting and flooring. As well, the renovations quickly led to renovations of the municipal court, as well.

Bowie School involves all in ACS Recess Relay
For the third straight year, Bowie students and faculty have “Teamed Up to Fight Cancer” — and each team was armed with a catchy name, a sports theme, and its own banner and sporty accessories. Bowie Elementary School is an important part of the success of American Cancer Society’s Navarro County Relay for Life. This year, they raised $4,100.52 for cancer research, bringing their three-year total to over $15,000.
