Corsicana —
A major water leak on South U.S. 287 between Interstate 45 and Guardian Glass meant the glass manufacturer was out of water for several hours Tuesday evening, and it was all hands on deck for city water crews.
The break in the 12-inch water line was reported around 4:15 or 4:30 p.m. by customers along the route, according to Charles Leist, environmental services director for the City of Corsicana.
“We had a clamp fail on the water line, and we went in and repaired that,” he said. “It was probably the age of the existing clamp.”
The repair was relatively easy, but the preparations took a little while, Leist said.
“Of course, you’ve got to have the utilities come out, you can’t just start digging,” he explained. “We had to have the gas lines located and there were three telephone bundles close to the water line, so those had to be located before we could actually dig and repair the water line.”
Many of the customers along that route were able to access water most of the evening, but Guardian was the biggest customer on the end of the line. The line was flushed out and water was back on by 9 p.m. Tuesday evening, Leist said.
The city has had dozens of leaks this summer, which is typical in the clayish soil of North Central Texas, but it hasn’t been as bad as the summer of 2011, when the drought caused wide sun cracks and put breaking pressure on water and sewer lines throughout the region.
“From what I understand we’ve actually had fewer leaks this year than last year,” Leist said. “We’re doing better, but we’re still busy.”

Police department open house Tuesday
The renovation of the Corsicana Police Department got a bit more involved than it was originally intended to. An error with some concrete resulted in water flooding city hall, and forcing replacement of carpeting and flooring. As well, the renovations quickly led to renovations of the municipal court, as well.
