Palace Theatre to host ‘Roots & Boots Tour’ March 30

Corsicana — Three legends of country music will be performing in a special concert on March 30 at the Palace Theatre in Corsicana.

Aaron Tippin, Joe Diffie, and Sammy Kershaw will be taking the stage at 7:30 p.m. as part of their Roots and Boots Tour. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Tuesday, and prices range from $40 to $55.

The show has sold out in almost every venue since its inception, according to Diffie.

“It’s been going over great,” he said. “It’s been a real nice run so far.”

Tippin, best known as for his song “You’ve Got to Stand for Something,” has five gold albums, and a one platinum album for his thousands of sales. Diffie has had twelve number-one hits, including “John Deere Green,” “Pickup Man,” and “Ships that Don’t Come In,” as well as four gold and platinum albums. Kershaw is a legend of country music whose platinum albums have included such classics as “She Don’t Know She’s Beautiful,” “I Can’t Reach Her Anymore,” “Don’t Go Near the Water,” “National Working Woman’s Holiday” and “Love of My Life.”

This collaboration has been a lot of fun, Diffie said in a telephone interview with the Corsicana Daily Sun this past week.

“We have a good time,” he said. “We goof around a lot, we tell stories. It’s a real different feeling from a concert. It’s acoustic, by and large. We sing along with each other’s stuff, and tease each other about different things.”

There’s a good sense of camaraderie between artists who respect and like each other, he said.

“Actually, I’m about to walk out the door and go meet with them about a project we’re thinking about. An album based on what we do live,” Diffie said.

The tour is criss-crossing the country, with shows in Pennsylvania, Kansas, Tennessee, New Mexico and Branson, Mo., but Diffie said he’s looking forward to the Texas show.

“I can’t wait to get down there and see everybody,” he said. “We’ll have a great time.”

Griffin retires after three decades teaching
When the school bell rings today, it will signal for most the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation.
But for Dana Griffin, it will mark the end of his 30-year career teaching ag science at Corsicana High School, the only job he’s had since graduating from college.
Though he is excited about his new horizons, this day will most likely be bittersweet, as 30 years of animals, ag projects, and kids — it’s always been about the kids — draws to a close.

Schools ready for summer
With a nearly balmy winter, local school districts faced the end of the year with so-called “snow days” still in their pockets. Corsicana schools will spend one of those bad weather days Monday, taking off Memorial Day.
The other free day was spent on April 9, the Monday after Easter.
“We called it Good Friday, Better Monday,” said Susan Johnson, spokeswoman for the district.
