It’s a simple thought: Kids should have a good pair of athletic shoes to do the things that young kids do so well – run, jump, play.
This Christmas season, the need for one of life’s necessities — a pair of shoes — is great, right within the CISD.
Members of CISD administration, teachers and counselors have identified 171 students, district-wide, that would greatly benefit from shoes this Christmas.
“There are also psychological benefits when it comes to school,” said Susan Johnson, Executive Director of Public Relations for CISD. “We want students to have good self-esteem and come prepared to learn when they come to school. When a young male student is wearing his sister’s shoes that are perhaps too big and slip off his feet throughout the day, he will not be confident to walk to the halls of his school. This impacts a student’s confidence level tremendously.”
If you ask a teacher, they will tell you stories of repairing shoes with duct tape and glue, she said.
“Shoes are definitely an important need for our students,” said Diane Acock, principal at Fannin Elementary School. “It would break your heart to see how some of our students learn to function with shoes that are too big, or too small, or perhaps falling apart.”
Toys and food for all students and families in need are being collected through efforts of Arms of Hope and Athletic Teams of all ages throughout Corsicana, Navarro County and the DFW Metroplex.
By Dec. 17, all these gifts will end up in the make-shift “Santa’s Warehouse” (otherwise known as the Baseball Field House at Corsicana High School). The students and athletes will work to get the toys sorted and bagged so they can all be delivered before schools are out for the holidays. The Arms of Hope organization will help to supply more than 80 families with food.
“So many people have been asking how they can help,” said Coach Autrey. “I think the shoe donations will go a long way. I work with the kids at Navarro Elementary in PE classes. It would thrill some of them to have a new pair of shoes.”
Guests are welcome to stop by the Administration Building at 601 North 13th Street to identify a grade, school, or shoe size — if they have a preference — to purchase a pair of shoes for a student in need. Donations in shoes, or money to purchase shoes, are welcome. Collections are due by Monday, Dec. 17 at the CISD Administration building.
“We certainly appreciate anyone willing to contribute,” said Johnson.

Police department open house Tuesday
The renovation of the Corsicana Police Department got a bit more involved than it was originally intended to. An error with some concrete resulted in water flooding city hall, and forcing replacement of carpeting and flooring. As well, the renovations quickly led to renovations of the municipal court, as well.
