NCSO asks for burn notice

False alarms end in needless fire runs

Corsicana — With rains expected this weekend, the Navarro County Commissioners Court took no action Thursday on instituting any burn ban, but did field a request from the sheriff’s department — if you are going to conduct a burn, let the sheriff’s department know.

Capt. Brett Latta told commissioners that while the number of fire calls has been low, there have been instances where landowners conducting controlled burns on their property have failed to notify their local fire department or the sheriff’s department of their plans.

“They need to be sure to let us know,” Latta said Thursday, so dispatch personnel won’t send out volunteer firefighters to a call where they are not needed — a waste of time, manpower and fuel, and possibly keeping those same firefighters from coming to the aid of a person or situation that does need their assistance.

Latta said a phone call to the sheriff’s department would help end those needless runs by volunteers.

Those planning on conducting burns should also exercise caution when burning, and avoid doing so on windy days when an otherwise “controlled” burn can get “out of control” rather quickly.

The phone number for the Navarro County Sheriff’s Department is (903) 654-3002.

By Bob Belcher/Daily Sun Staff Writer

Consent Agenda

Minutes of previous meetings, Lake Planning and Zoning actions, and the payment of bills were approved by commissioners on the consent agenda.

Burn Ban

No action was taken by commissioners on any ban on burning, but Capt. Brett Latta asks that those conducting controlled burns notify the Sheriff's Department of their plans to prevent sending out volunteer fire departments unnecessarily.

An agreement with DPS for purchase of blood draw kits for DWI checks was approved by commissioners. The kits are used during “no refusal” enforcement efforts, and for court-ordered tests.

The county approved its local match fund participation for the bridge replacement program for bridges on SECR 3040 and NWCR 2310.

Items declared salvage

At the request of the IT department, commissioners declared two computer scanners as salvage.

Drilling variance, special use permit tabled

A request for a variance for Dallas Production to drill within 200 feet of a boundary line of property containing a cell tower, and a special use permit to drill near SECR 3280 and SECR 3240, was tabled.

Courthouse restoration financing discussed

Commissioners heard a presentation from Don Gonzales of Estrada Hinojosa for bond issues to help finance the courthouse restoration program. Commissioners will meet again beginning at 9 a.m. Friday for two more presentations from prospective bond attorney firms. Friday morning’s meeting will be held in the JP courtroom in the Justice Center.

Executive Session

An executive session was held to discuss pending litigation. No action was taken.
