Chili’s to host two charitable benefits this week

Corsicana — Chili’s Grill and Bar is hosting benefits for two local organizations this week: Tuesday’s diners can help the Child Advocacy Center, while Wednesday is for the Corsicana Animal Shelter.

Customers who come in between 4 and 10 p.m. and who bring in a flyer can get 10 percent of their bill donated to that day’s cause. Flyers for the Advocacy Center are available at the center or from board members. Flyers for the animal shelter are available through the shelter or at city hall.

Money raised for the advocacy center will go towards services for abused children, while money raised for the shelter will go towards abandoned pets.

The Advocacy Center houses two separate programs, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), which appoints volunteers to speak on behalf of kids caught up in the court system, typically in a disputed custody; and Child Advocates, which interviews and counsels children and families where there has been abuse. It is an independent non–profit organization.

Although tax dollars from both the county and city go to support the routine expenses of the city’s animal shelter, private donations go to pay for things that can’t be predicted, such as vet costs for sick or injured pets, according to Police Chief Randy Bratton.

This past summer, the shelter increased its hours to the public. The shelter is open from noon to 6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and on Saturdays from noon to four p.m. It is closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.

“The new hours have proven successful, but more citizens need to be aware of the new operating hours,” Bratton said.
