Corsicana — James Blair Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution

The James Blair Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution met Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013 at the Kinsloe House. Chapter Regent Jan Warren called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance. The members sang the Star Spangled Banner accompanied by Gelene Simpson at the piano. The prayer was led by Sandra Curtis. Following the National Defender report by Jan Warren, the Secretary read the minutes which were approved as read. The Treasurer’s report was provided by Ruth Scott. Annual reports were submitted by committee chairmen.

Plans were discussed regarding the two February meetings. The American History Essay winners and the D.A.R. Good Citizens will be honored at the Feb. 13 meeting at 3 p.m. at the Kinsloe House. New members will be honored at the Feb. 27, 2013 meeting at 3 p.m. at the home of  Vice Regent Suzanne Smith.

Hostesses for the January meeting were Mellie Howard and Geneva Davis.



American Business Women’s Association January meeting report

The regular monthly meeting of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) was held Jan. 14 at the Kinsloe House.  President Kelly Black called the meeting to order and roll was called.  After the invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance, dinner was served. Minutes and the treasury report were approved. Woman of the year committee was appointed and members are Suzanne Plyer, Betty Stokes and Martha McCarter.

The speaker for the evening was Jarod Gordon, Trust Officer of Community National Bank & Trust. Jarod is a graduate of Corsicana High School and Texas Tech University. He gave a very informative program on investment management, 401-Ks and IRAs.  Jarod informed the group of how Community National Bank & Trust can help individuals with their investments as far as a diversified portfolio and estate planning. Jarod also advised the group of how CNB&T has given large charitable contributions to Navarro County Youth Expo, United Way, Salvation Army, educational scholarships and many other local agencies. Jarod was the guest of ABWA member Toni Vaughan, who is also an officer at Community National Bank & Trust.

In other business, scholarship chairman Betty Stokes informed the members of the recipients of the second semester scholarships provided by ABWA. They are Courtney Wigley, Morgan Burnett Williams, Allyson Biggar and Emily Davis. Also, the club’s annual golf tournament will be April 6 at the Corsicana Country Club beginning at 1 p.m.  The cost is $75 each or $300 for a team of four.  ABWA golf committee members are Patti Taylor, Paula Jones, Ruth Laudan, Jeannie Baird, Kelly Black, Lou Ann Allen and Elonda Cassady.  More information may be received by contacting Elonda Cassady at (903) 654-3747. President Kelly Black inducted new member Debbie Wilson, with Texas Bank Mortgage Company. The next meeting of ABWA will be Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Kinsloe House.

It is at once a diverse population and an exclusive one.

    The Dawson Garden Club has chosen the home of Melanie Dotson at 900 N. Fullerton Ave. as the Yard of the Month for May. The lawns, both back and front, are beautifully manicured. The trees are luxuriant as are the flowers encircling them. The front porch is inviting and there are beautiful blooms. The winding path to the front door lends a romantic touch to this beautiful landscape, and there are colorful blooms at the back porch as well. Go by to see this lovely yard.
