Corsicana —
A Christmas tradition in the Corsicana High School Ag department did not fall by the wayside after the retirement of Dana Griffin, but instead has been picked up by new agriculture science teacher Brittany Skinner.
The poinsettia drive, and horticulture class project, is in full swing. The greenhouse at CHS is nearly full with vibrant red blooms, which, despite the balmy temperatures, does signal that Christmas is coming.
“We were asked if we’d continue the poinsettia fundraiser,” Skinner said. “We have had tons of support. Everyone who bought previously is still buying.”
Skinner said many churches have pre-ordered anywhere from 100 to 250 of the plants to decorated their sanctuaries and so forth, and the rest are available for purchase. Each plant costs $8 to buy, and the proceeds go toward the Future Farmers of America program at Corsicana High School.
Skinner is originally from Forney, and began her ag teaching career in Navarro County in August.
“I have had lots of support, and everyone has been so willing to help,” she said. “I have nothing to complain about. Every day is enjoyable, even on days I get here at 7 a.m. and don’t go home until midnight. I’ve never regretted the decision to come here and take this job.”
The poinsettia plants are already started when they arrive at the greenhouse, but students in Skinner’s horticulture class learn how to properly water and care for them, and work very hard, especially for a small class, Skinner said.

Police department open house Tuesday
The renovation of the Corsicana Police Department got a bit more involved than it was originally intended to. An error with some concrete resulted in water flooding city hall, and forcing replacement of carpeting and flooring. As well, the renovations quickly led to renovations of the municipal court, as well.
