The Navarro County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed it is investigating a possible theft of county property from the Precinct 3 county barn.
“The complaint was that an employee was suspected of stealing fuel,” Cotten said.
Cotten said Det. Scott Stephens has been assigned to the case after a complaint was made by Pct. 3 Commissioner David “Butch” Warren.
A copy of the complaint released by the sheriff’s department describes the incident as “theft over $1,500 but under $20,000” and lists the alleged stolen property as “5,400 gallons of diesel fuel” with an estimated value of $11,477.
Information as to how the fuel was reportedly taken, or over what period of time, was not available, said Chief Deputy Mike Cox, who said the investigation is still open.
Warren told the Daily Sun that a Precinct 3 employee was terminated on Friday.
“That is true, but it is still under investigation,” Warren said. Warren would not confirm the reason stated for the termination of the employee on Friday, but did acknowledge the firing was in connection with the theft report.
Theft of property over $1,500 but under $20,000 is classified as a State Jail Felony, punishable by a maximum of two years in state jail, or up to five years probation, and a $10,000 fine.
The employee is not being named because no charges have been filed or arrest made in the case.
