Collins Middle School boys take top Ag Mechanics prize

Corsicana — Barbecue pits and picnic tables, swings and deer feeders were joined by a mobile wildlife meat cooler, made by the Collins Middle School ag team, which garnered them yet another Grand Champion win at the Navarro County Youth Exposition Wednesday.

This is Collin’s ag teams’ third  year in a row to win Grand Champion. Coached by ag teacher Larry Acock, members of the team are Tucker Farmer, Austin Rios, Kishawn Kelley, Avery Cantu, Drew Miller and Sam Gilfillan. This team had an impressive run at the larger livestock shows, bringing home awards everywhere they’ve shown.

Reserve Grand Champion went to a smaller group from Corsicana FFA, made up of Dave Clemons, Luke Mackey, and Cristobal Avizu, a first-time NCYE participant.

“We made a 20-foot lowboy trailer,” Clemons said. “It has an air tank and air compressor, skid plate, diamond-plated neck and toolboxes, which are built into the floor.”

This trailer won first in its class at San Antonio Livestock show and second in class at the Houston show.

Their instructor, Mark Vitters, said often when you get a group working together, there will be part of the group who is really driven and part that is more relaxed, shall we say.

“These three boys put in equal effort, equal work,” Vitters said. “These boys are all very capable young men with very admirable work ethic. They just did a great job this year. I feel they’ve learned some skills they can take any direction they want to go.”

Kristyn Stewart of Rice FFA received the award for Showmanship, with her alfalfa hay feeder for deer.

The event was sponsored by Brazos Valley Equipment.
