Coyote Squadron air show Saturday
The Coyote Squadron is taking to the air for its fund-raising finale of the year.
The event will be the “swan song” for Col. Steve Richmond, Coyote Squadron Unit Leader. Richmond will also be a member of the Falcon Flight, a formation flight part of an air show scheduled for Saturday at the Tucker Hardgrave Memorial Hangar at Corsicana airport.
Proceeds from the fund-raiser will be used to help rebuild “Daffy,” a PT19 just like the ones they used to train here in World War II.
The formation team is composed of both former military pilots and experienced civilian private pilots. The leader is Stu McCurdy of Round Rock, retired from the United States Air Force as a colonel.
Other team members include another retired USAF colonel, Lowell LeMay from Round Rock, a former Marine nick-named “Jarhead,” a couple of excellent civilian-trained pilots, one man from Waco who was USAF, a crop-duster, and an airline captain, and Richmond, the token navy pilot.
“We travel around the country flying in airshows, asking only for a little gas money,” Richmond said.
The day starts at 11 a.m. with a barbecue lunch. It is free, but a $5 donation per person is suggested.
At noon, the Coyote Squadron is raffling off an ATV.
After the festivities, the Falcon Flight formation team will take off to perform an air show routine.
Falcon Flight is a group of pilots who love flying in formation in their “experimental” aircraft, Richmond said. These aircraft have been built in a garage or hangar.
In this case, they are all Van’s RV designs built by the enthusiast with great care and precision, Richmond said, because it is the builder’s life on the line when his creation flies. Richmond did not build his, but bought it from a retired engineer.
