‘Welcome back, Callarman’
New Dawson High School principal is returning to her county roots
The new person hired to fill the Dawson High School principal’s job isn’t new to Dawson.
Amy Callarman, 47, grew up in Dawson, the daughter of Dan and Ann Griffin of Corsicana. She has been hired to replace Ronnie Shiflet, 58, who’s retiring on June 25.
“I went all the way through school there, first through 12th, and graduated in ‘78,” Callarman said in a phone interview. “I have family in the area, and they let me know about (the opening).”
With both her kids now at Baylor, she was eager to move closer to Waco from Crandall, which is near Terrell in Kaufman County.
“So that worked out great,” she said.
Although she worked for an accounting firm out of college, Callarman began teaching business courses at Ferris High School. She taught for 11 years at Crandall High before becoming assistant principal two years ago, she said.
“Our number one goal is to do everything we can to make sure students are successful across the board,” she said. “If you don’t have a genuine love of kids then education’s just not for you.”
Dawson ISD received 56 applications for the high school principal’s job, and a committee narrowed it down to 10, and from those, five were asked to come in for interviews.
“My personal philosophy is that a principal should be the instructional leader of the school,” said Superintendent Arvel Rotan. “In dealing with Amy, and talking to her references and other people who have worked with her, I felt like she would truly be the best instructional leader for Dawson school.”
Callarman’s sister is a teacher at Dawson Elementary School, but Callarman said her own “calling” is for secondary school-age students.
“I admire elementary school teachers. My prayers are for them,” she said, laughing.
Although she’s been a high school teacher, Callarman will have the opportunity to interact with a slightly younger set of students at Dawson, since the principal’s job encompasses seventh through 12th grades.
Callarman starts her new job officially on July 1, but she’s been coming down for short intervals to look at teacher applications, and to hunt for a house, she said.
