Evett remembered as loving father, husband

Funeral services for mail carrier to be held Sunday

Donnie Evett, a Corsicana mail carrier, and victim of a hit and run accident Tuesday, will be laid to rest Sunday.

Evett, 37, died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. Evett’s mail van was struck by a truck that ran a red light.

His wife, Jackie, spoke of his love for family and friends, and his desire to take care “of his customers” on his mail route.

“He was the most wonderful husband and father ever ... everything he did was for us,” she said Thursday.

Evett moved his family to Corsicana five years ago, in part because of the educational services the family found for their daughter Makenzie, who has Cerebral Palsy.

“He uprooted his whole life to bring us here just for Makenzie,” she said. “She’s doing great here.” The Evett’s also have another daughter, Madison.

She said anyone who ever met Evett would remember his smile, and his willingness to help others.

“He took pride in taking care of ‘his customers,’ as he called them,” Jackie said. “He always took care of the elderly people on his route ... he called them his ‘little ladies’ ... he always put others first.”

It was because of his desire to help others that she made the decision to donate Evett’s organs after his death.

“Knowing him and how he cared about others, I knew it was, without question, something he would want to do,” she said.

His family of postal workers at the Corsicana Post Office has established a fund at Bank of America for the family. A fund for his daughter Makenzie’s therapy treatments has also been established at Innovative Therapies.

Visitation for Evett will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Corley Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Corsicana’s First Baptist Church, where Evett was a member. Interment will follow in the Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery.
