CISD recognizes achievements through ‘C Awards’

Corsicana —

Teachers, volunteers and students were all honored Monday as the Corsicana Independent School District Board of Trustees handed out the district’s “C Awards” for the month.

The district’s “C Awards” go to individuals who go “above and beyond” in the interest of the students in the CISD through instruction, support or achievements.

The awards — presented by several board members — included the reading of a “nomination letter” about the recipients, and the presentation of a certificate commemorating the award.

Honors presented Monday included awards to Mindy Maass, presented by board member Father Ed Monk; Darlene Jackson, honored by board member Barbara Kelley; Robert “Bubba” Wallace, presented by Terry Seth; and CISD science teachers Wendy Steele, Paula Carrico and Martha Hartley, recognized by board member Scott Watkins.

The board also paid special recognition to three students as a part of the evening, including two participants in the Drane Science Fair, and a crowning achievement in scouting.

Hayden Boyd just received his “Eagle Scout” designation, and was given a letter acknowledging his success by CISD Board President Kerri Anderson-Donica.

Jack Blaton, 12, and Lexi White, 11, both winners in the Drane School Science Fair, were also recognized by trustees, as both students shared their projects with the board.

By Bob Belcher/Daily Sun Staff Writer

2012-13 calendar approved

Trustees gave the OK to the school calendar for Fall 2012/Spring 2013. Students will begin classes on Aug. 27, 2012, and conclude for the year on June 7, 2013. The week of Nov. 19, 2012, will be the Thanksgiving break; the weeks of Dec. 24 and Dec. 31, 2012,  will be Christmas break; the week of March 11, 2013 will be Spring break.

Call for election approved

A board election is set for Saturday, May 12, 2012. This year the positions held by John Saberton and Barbara Kelley are up for election — both trustees are running for re-election. Filling closes for the race on March 6.

Consent Agenda approved

Among consent agenda items, the board accepted donations from the CHS Booster Club, the Corsicana Booster Club, and donations of a piano and aquarium for Carroll Elementary School. Also, minutes from meetings held Jan. 23 and Feb. 6 were approved, as was the February 2012 financial report.

Announcements

Dr. Diane Frost, superintendent, reminded trustees of a board workshop slated for 6 p.m. on March 5; Spring break for the district the week of March 12 through 16; and the next regular board meeting at 6 p.m. on March 19.

Closed session held

Trustees held a closed session to discuss employment, complaints against an employee, and to seek advice about pending or contemplated litigation. Following the closed session, trustees took action on administrative contracts for the 2012-2013 year. Details of that action had not been made available to the Daily Sun as of press time Tuesday.

  • 5-25 Griffin.jpg Griffin retires after three decades teaching

When the school bell rings today, it will signal for most the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation.
But for Dana Griffin, it will mark the end of his 30-year career teaching ag science at Corsicana High School, the only job he’s had since graduating from college.
Though he is excited about his new horizons, this day will most likely be bittersweet, as 30 years of animals, ag projects, and kids — it’s always been about the kids — draws to a close.

The other free day was spent on April 9, the Monday after Easter.
“We called it Good Friday, Better Monday,” said Susan Johnson, spokeswoman for the district.
