VOICE ‘Spring Training’ program returns

Spring fun and learning offered for children

Corsicana — VOICE will be partnering with Corsicana ISD during Spring Break to offer Spring Training. Spring Training is a fun and healthy way for elementary children to spend their spring break.

This no cost day camp will be held this year March 11-15 at Jose Antonio Navarro Elementary School.

The rising concern of childhood obesity was the leading factor in starting the Spring Training Program. VOICE has partnered over the past six years to offer Spring Training at five community sites. Spring Training is offered in Corsicana, Kerens, two locations in Waco, and in Henderson County.

Spring Training began as a way to teach elementary children the importance of nutrition, physical fitness, and healthy decision making while enjoying their Spring Break. Information is provided to children to help them to understand both the long and short term benefits of being and staying healthy throughout their lives.  Information on making healthy family lifestyle changes are also provided to parents.

Children attending Spring Training will learn about nutrition, fitness, and leading an overall healthy lifestyle. Spring Training will be overseen by VOICE staff and community volunteers. High school students who are currently participating in the VOICE Training Our Own Leaders Program will also serve as role models during the camp. Each camper will receive at Spring Training T-shirt.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Approximately 17 percent of children and adolescents aged 2 to 19 years are obese. Of the 214 students attending the three locations of Spring Training in 2011, 92 percent reported that they had learned a healthy activity that could be used in their daily life.  With the overall state obesity rate at over 30 percent (CDC), this is a positive change for future generations.

Spring Training will be offered during the week of March 11-15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Enrollment is limited and based on first come, first serve.  Registration is now available online at www.voiceinc.org.
