Collins Middle School Spring Fling Saturday

Garage sale donations accepted from the community

Corsicana — A Spring Fling to raise money for a Washington field trip for Collins Middle School students will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Middle School gym and cafeteria, 1500 Dobbins Road.

The event will feature a garage sale, barbecue and hot dog luncheon, vendor fair and raffle.

So far, 42 kids have signed up to go on the June trip to see the capitol building, the Lincoln memorial and other sites in Washington D.C., according to organizer Denise Goodrich, a teacher at Collins.

“We’ve done other fundraisers but this is our big one,” Goodrich explained. The trip will cost about $75,000 because so many children are going, but they’ve worked concession stand at volleyball games, sold beef jerky, and Sonic cards for months now.

The garage sale is normal for Collins, with teachers donating to the cause and donations are also being accepted from the community. Large and small items can be dropped off after 7 p.m. at Collins Middle School in the gym.

In addition to the garage sale, nearly 30 vendors are also going to be participating in the fling, selling snacks, baked goods, jewelry, home canned goods, kitchen gadgets, clothing, and cosmetics, among other things.

“Traditionally, we’ve done a garage sale, but one of the parents stepped up and offered to do a vendor event, and the vendors paid a fee to participate, so we’ve already raised $1,000,” Goodrich said.

The barbecue plate lunches will cost $6 each, with hot dog lunches costing $3 each.

On top of all the things to see and purchase, there will also be a 50/50 cash raffle.

This year, the number of students going to Washington is more than doubled from last year. The goal is to keep it going as a tradition, and allow it to grow even more, Goodrich said. Sure it will cost more, but it’s worth it in the amazing opportunity for the students, she said.

“It’s a lot of money, they need a lot of help,” Goodrich said.
