Corsicana — The animal-rights activists came back to the Corsicana City Council to ask for a new animal shelter again Tuesday when the council met in regular session.

The issue of building a new shelter was not on the agenda, so no council members spoke to the issue.

Ralph Gonzalez, who recently filed to run for the precinct 1 council seat, said not calling for a new shelter is a missed opportunity. Gonzalez suggested trying to find a new location for the proposed shelter and talking to an architect.

Christina McCoy asked the council to open up a dialogue with the people on the animal services board and those who work with animal rescues.

Raul Jimenez said having a new shelter would reflect better on Corsicana, and he offered his time and tools to the effort.

Julie Maupin also suggested better communications, and possibly lower fees to help reduce the number of unadopted animals being euthanized. She also asked for more hours for animal shelter workers, which could increase the number of adoption events in the community.

Carol Horvath asked for a new shelter.

The animal shelter has been in the forefront of city business for several weeks, as groups such as the Humane Society have asked for a bond election to build a new shelter. It’s opposed by the majority of the city council, which is concerned that more debt would increase property taxes and hurt the local economy.

In other business, the council took the following actions:

• Approved calling the city elections on May 12 for precinct 1, precinct 3 and city attorney.

• Called for an auction of surplus city materials, including some vehicles, some old computers and old radios.

• Renewed for five years the lease agreement with the Corsicana Youth Baseball program.

• Heard a report from Police Chief Randy Bratton on the issue of racial profiling in traffic tickets and arrests from those stops. The police department does not appear to be violating federal rules on racial profiling, since tickets seem to fall fairly close to the percentages of the population’s racial make-up.

Griffin retires after three decades teaching
When the school bell rings today, it will signal for most the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation.
But for Dana Griffin, it will mark the end of his 30-year career teaching ag science at Corsicana High School, the only job he’s had since graduating from college.
Though he is excited about his new horizons, this day will most likely be bittersweet, as 30 years of animals, ag projects, and kids — it’s always been about the kids — draws to a close.

Schools ready for summer
With a nearly balmy winter, local school districts faced the end of the year with so-called “snow days” still in their pockets. Corsicana schools will spend one of those bad weather days Monday, taking off Memorial Day.
The other free day was spent on April 9, the Monday after Easter.
“We called it Good Friday, Better Monday,” said Susan Johnson, spokeswoman for the district.
