When the clock struck midnight on Monday night, a new term of office began for several county positions, and the swearing in ceremonies began with very little delay.
Sheriff Elmer Tanner and 13th District Judge James Lagomarsino took their oaths of office in a midnight ceremony held in the Justice of the Peace Courtroom in the Navarro County Justice Center. Both Tanner and Lagomarsino decided to hold the midnight ceremony to provide continuation of leadership in their positions should a legal or law enforcement issue arise.
Connie Hickman, Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace, presided over the swearing in of the two. She also swore in her husband, Ron Hickman, who was re-elected to another term as Pct. 4 Constable of Harris County.
Sheriff Tanner held a swearing in ceremony for all sheriff’s office employees on New Year’s Day, in a ceremony held at 8 a.m. Tuesday in the County Courtroom of the Navarro County Courthouse. Tanner also swore in Morris Steward as his Chief Deputy. He said the department would be going through an “evolution” over the next several weeks and months and challenged his deputies, detention officers and communicators to represent the department well in all their duties.
All of the other county’s elected officials were sworn in Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. in the District Courtroom. Tanner and Lagomarsino repeated their oaths before Tom Gray, Chief Justice of the 10th Court of Appeals. Tanner also had his family ceremonially pin his sheriff’s badge on him, as they had done Monday night.
Gray, Lagomarsino and County Judge H.M. Davenport Jr. presided over the swearing in of other elected officials.
Taking the oaths Wednesday were Court-At-Law Judge Amanda Putman, County Tax Assessor Russell Hudson, Pct. 1 Commissioner Jason Grant, Pct. 3 Commissioner David “Butch” Warren, District Clerk Josh Tackett, and all four county constables — Mike Davis of Pct. 1, David Foreman of Pct. 2, Nicole McMahan of Pct. 3, and Tommy Grant of Pct. 4.

A former plumbing supply shop that has since become nothing more than one wall and one partial wall, is going to become the latest city park in Corsicana.

Police department open house Tuesday
The renovation of the Corsicana Police Department got a bit more involved than it was originally intended to. An error with some concrete resulted in water flooding city hall, and forcing replacement of carpeting and flooring. As well, the renovations quickly led to renovations of the municipal court, as well.
