This is the time of year when everyone seems to be saying to themselves “maybe I should try to start exercising or dieting.”
Just in time for your New Year’s resolution of a healthy lifestyle, the local Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is launching “Step Up and Scale Down,” combined with the YMCA’s Cardio Fit exercise program to help the public in their weight management efforts.
The twelve week series will kick off Jan. 9 at the Corsicana “Y” and non-Y members are welcome. The Cardio Fit class which is a low impact cardio and strength class that works on components of fitness will be held from 9 to 9:45 a.m., followed by “Step Up and Scale Down” weigh in and weekly motivation lesson from 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
“The Step Up and Scale Down/Cardio Fit is a great program to do with a friend or family member. It is always easier to reach your goals when you have additional support,” said Paula Butler, Navarro County Extension Agent said.
The program will consist of weekly lessons to help participants move toward a healthier weight and will include a weekly weight check-in, weekly challenge to “stay the course,” including such elements as:
• Dinner Tonight! — healthy recipes and tips, exercise resources, and a weight-loss planner.
• Scale Down by Setting Goals.
• Step Up to a Healthy Plate.
• Scale Down by Label Reading.
• Step Up to Breakfast and Menu Planning.
• Scale Down with Moves to Lose.
• Step Up Your Hydration.
• Scale Down by Finding your Motivational Mojo.
• Step Up to Healthy Snacking
• Scale Down with a Colorful Plate.
• Step Up to Successful Socializing.
• Scale Down by Knowing Your Numbers.
• Step Up and Celebrate.
The Step Up and Scale Down program is based on the USDA 2010 Guidelines, which is intended to help Americans choose a healthful eating plan. “Step Up & Scale Down is a researched based program that has proven success in weight management and building healthy lifestyle habits,” Butler said.

Texas residents missing after tornadoes found safe
People who were missing in the wake of the destructive tornadoes in North Texas have been found safe, officials said Friday, but they didn't indicate when residents of one hard-hit neighborhood will be allowed to return to survey damage to their homes.

Police department open house Tuesday
The renovation of the Corsicana Police Department got a bit more involved than it was originally intended to. An error with some concrete resulted in water flooding city hall, and forcing replacement of carpeting and flooring. As well, the renovations quickly led to renovations of the municipal court, as well.
