Harbuck goes home with Breeding Rabbit banner

Corsicana — Alex Harbuck found out through experience what it takes to go home with the Grand Champion banner. Harbuck, of Blooming Grove FFA, has shown for the past six years and won Grand Champion in the Breeding Rabbits division Wednesday with her prized Californian buck.

“You just have to spend a lot of time with the rabbits,” Harbuck said. “It takes time to get them to cooperate.”

Reserve Champion honors went to Lacie DeRojas of Dawson FFA with her Broken Black Satin doe which also won Best of Breed. Her brother, and last year’s Reserve Champion, Will Miller accepted the awards for DeRojas who was attending another school function.

“Lacie’s advice to other rabbit breeders would be to work hard and never give up.” Miller said of his sister’s success.

There were 110 entries registered in this year’s Breeding Rabbit Division which was a good turnout, according to co-chairperson Rosemarie Goff.

“I’ve been doing this for 20 years,” Goff said. “This is one of the biggest breeder shows so far, we are seeing good quality rabbits and they keep improving every year. Our judges have been amazed at how Navarro County residents help each other learn what it takes to breed a fine animal. Breeding rabbits is also an event that even the kids who live in town can be a part of.”

“We have some very experienced participants in the event but also a good many new kids,” Co-chairperson Daryl Shelton said. “I hope those who did not take home a ribbon don’t get discouraged. This is a great opportunity to learn from each other. This has turned out to be a really good show, things have gone smoothly, we got started earlier and I’m glad to participate.”
