Man arrested after motorcycle hide and seek (UPDATE: Adds comments and information from Rice Chief Larry Cheek)

Corsicana —  

A Kerens man is in jail after being clocked for speeding on East State Highway 31 Saturday, and fleeing as far north as Rice before being arrested in Corsicana.

The suspect, who cannot be identified until he is arraigned, was clocked at 94 mph in a 65 mph zone near True Value by Sgt. Todd Morris, Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton said. Morris never got close to the motorcycle after initiating a pursuit, but noticed it take Interstate 45 north, so he had dispatch alert the Rice police department, Bratton said.

Rice Police Chief Larry Cheek said the suspect crossed over at exit 238, near Lucky Lady. He was clocked doing 90, and was pursued by Rice Officer Eric Cuellar.

“(The suspect) got up to some high speeds,” Cheek said, “and he was driving reckless.”

The suspect took Business 45 back into town. There was never a pursuit in town, Bratton said, but the Navarro County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers assisted in searching for the motorcycle.

 “It was kind of spotty,” said Bratton, who said officers spotted him at different times in different areas of town.

Corsicana Officer Kris Waltrowski spotted the suspect pushing the motorcycle downtown near Commerce, apparently trying to hide it, Bratton said, and approached him. At that point, he got back on the bike, and took off, despite Waltrowski’s commands to stop, Bratton said.

Moments later he crashed out taking Mall Drive off North Beaton. He suffered minor injuries, and was arrested there, Bratton said.

The motorcycle was apparently new, Bratton said. It has dealer plates on it.

The suspect was charged with speeding, 94 in a 65, and felony evading arrest by the CPD, Bratton said. Rice charged him with felony evading arrest and reckless driving, Cheek said.
